Job Title : Deputy General Manager – Design & Engineering (BESS) Department : Engineering & Projects Location : [Insert Location] Reports To : General Manager – Design & Engineering / Head of Projects Job Purpose To lead the design and engineering activities of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects from concept to commissioning. The DGM will be responsible for ensuring that all technical designs meet industry standards, project requirements, safety regulations, and company objectives. Key Responsibilities Design & Engineering Lead the design of utility-scale and C&I BESS solutions. Review and approve electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering designs including SLDs, layouts, schematics, control systems, and protection schemes. Ensure integration with renewable energy systems (e.g., solar, wind) and grid infrastructure. Optimize system performance based on use-case requirements (e.g., peak shaving, frequency regulation, arbitrage). Ensure compliance with IEC, IEEE, UL, and other relevant standards. Project Development Support Provide technical input during pre-bid and proposal stages. Evaluate project feasibility and conduct techno-commercial assessments. Support preparation of tender documents, RFQs, and technical specifications. Stakeholder Coordination Liaise with OEMs, EPC contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders. Evaluate vendor proposals and lead technical negotiations. Collaborate with utility and regulatory bodies for grid interconnection and approvals. Quality & Safety Define design validation and verification procedures. Conduct design reviews and risk assessments (FMEA, HAZOP, etc.). Ensure designs meet HSE standards and project-specific safety norms. Team Leadership Guide and mentor a team of engineers across multiple disciplines. Promote knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement within the design team. Key Qualifications Education B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field. M.E./M.Tech preferred. Certifications in battery systems, power electronics, or energy storage are an advantage. Experience 12–18 years of total experience with at least 5 years in BESS or energy storage-related projects. Proven experience in handling end-to-end design for BESS systems (100kW to 100+MW scale). Technical Competencies Strong knowledge of BESS technologies (Li-ion, LFP, flow batteries, etc.). Proficiency in engineering tools (AutoCAD, ETAP, PVSyst, PSCAD, MATLAB, etc.). Familiarity with grid codes, SCADA/BMS systems, and EMS integration. Understanding of hybrid systems, microgrids, and renewable integration.
