Position Title: Senior Meteorologist Open Period: 26 May 2025 - 25 June 2025 Background: The Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES) is an international and intergovernmental institution, owned and managed by its Member States, for the generation and application of early warning information. RIMES evolved from the efforts of countries in Africa and Asia, in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, to establish a regional early warning system within a multi-hazard framework for the generation and communication of early warning information, and capacity building for preparedness and response to trans-boundary hazards. RIMES was established on 30 April 2009, and was registered with the United Nations on 1 July 2009. RIMES operates from its regional early warning center located at the campus of the Asian Institute of Technology in Pathumthani, Thailand. Position Description: The Senior Meteorologist will play a pivotal role in advancing meteorological research, weather prediction accuracy, early warning systems, and climate risk assessments. He/She will be responsible for overseeing all India-based projects, with a strong focus on strategic planning, resource management, and technical leadership in meteorology-related initiatives. The ideal candidate should possess a strong academic background in meteorology and demonstrate proven experience in project and team management Skills and Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences or related field Experience At least 8–10 years of progressive experience in meteorology, with significant experience in operational forecasting, climate modeling, or applied research Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and engage with multi-stakeholder groups. Proven expertise in numerical weather prediction models (e.g., WRF, ECMWF) Familiarity with the use of meteorological data in disaster risk reduction, agriculture, or water resource management Experience working with government agencies, humanitarian partners, or development organizations is preferred. Technical Skills: Certificate courses in atmospheric physics, dynamics, thermodynamics, climatology, satellite meteorology, and other relevant subjects Proficiency in relevant software (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, ArcGIS, GRADS). Strong knowledge of meteorological data systems (e.g., GTS, GIS, satellite-based monitoring Personal qualities Analytical thinker with problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure. Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of working in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments. Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with stakeholders. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Core Duties: Design, lead, and monitor meteorological observation systems and forecasting operations. Analyze meteorological data and generate accurate weather forecasts using modern tools and models. Contribute to the development and improvement of early warning systems, especially for extreme weather events. Collaborate with hydrologists, climatologists, and disaster risk reduction specialists. Guide the integration of meteorological data into disaster risk management and climate adaptation strategies. Project Oversight and Monitoring: Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of all India-based projects. Monitor project progress against milestones and ensure timely completion of deliverables. Prepare and present periodic project status reports to stakeholders. Resource Management: Manage and allocate resources across multiple projects efficiently. Supervise and support project teams to ensure optimal productivity and performance. Identify capacity gaps and recommend appropriate hiring or upskilling measures. Mission Planning and Approval: Coordinate and approve missions and field visits related to project implementation. Ensure all mission plans align with project objectives and timelines. Facilitate communication between project teams and external partners or agencies. Stakeholder Coordination: Liaise with national and state-level agencies, partners, and donors for effective collaboration. Ensure that project implementation complies with donor requirements and national frameworks. Risk Management and Compliance: Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies. Ensure compliance with organizational policies, MoUs, and government regulations. Contract Duration The contract will be for 1 year, subject to a 6-month probationary period, and annual performance review.
