Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of software engineers responsible for building and operating Azure Managed Instance for Apache Cassandra, a globally distributed, cloud-native database service. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and strategic execution to deliver high-scale, secure, and reliable database capabilities for enterprise customers.

Team Leadership & Talent Development
Manage and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a culture of growth, inclusion, and technical excellence.
Drive hiring, onboarding, and career development plans aligned with organizational goals.
Product Delivery & Execution
Own delivery of Cassandra MI roadmap features such as version upgrades, networking enhancements (VPN/VNet), security compliance, and performance optimizations.
Ensure timely execution of live-site reliability improvements, bug bashes, and operational excellence initiatives.
Technical Strategy
Define architecture and design patterns for distributed systems, focusing on scalability, observability, and automation.
Partner with PM and leadership to align technical investments with business priorities.
Operational Excellence
Oversee incident response and mitigation for production clusters, ensuring SLA compliance and customer satisfaction.
Drive continuous improvement in engineering systems, CI/CD pipelines, and telemetry.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Azure networking, security, and compliance teams to unblock dependencies and deliver integrated solutions.
Represent the team in leadership reviews, planning cycles, and customer escalations.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Proven experience managing engineering teams in distributed systems or database services.

Strong technical depth in Java/C#, cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred), and container orchestration.

Familiarity with Apache Cassandra internals, networking (VNet, VPN), and security standards.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on technical guidance.
