Tool Design Manager – Rail Coach Interior Components Manufacturing

Job Description

1. Tool Design & Development

Lead the design and development of tools for rail coach interior components manufacturing.

Coordinate closely with Design, Production, NPD, and Quality teams to develop new tools based on product and process requirements.

Review, approve, and validate tool design drawings, 3D models, and material selection.

Ensure all tools are designed for manufacturability, durability, ease of maintenance, and safety.

Drive continuous improvement and innovation in tool design to enhance productivity and reduce cycle times.

2. Tool & Die Manufacturing (Tool Making)

Oversee end-to-end tool-making activities including dies, jigs, fixtures, molds, gauges, and checking fixtures.

Ensure manufacturing accuracy, adherence to tight tolerances, and compliance with quality standards.

Monitor and optimize tool manufacturing timelines and costs without compromising quality.

Ensure timely availability of dies, jigs, fixtures, and tools for production and die-casting operations.

Plan and implement preventive and predictive maintenance for all tools.

Maintain tool life data and ensure tool performance meets production requirements.

3. Tool Maintenance & Repair

Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for all tools.

Monitor tool wear, damage, and initiate timely repair, refurbishing, or replacement.

Maintain stock of critical spares and consumables to eliminate production downtime.

Ensure quick turnaround of tool breakdowns and maintain high tool availability.

4. Team Management

Guide tool makers, tool maintenance technicians, and support staff.

Provide technical support, mentorship, and training.

Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and productivity standards.

5. Inventory Management & Documentation

Maintain inventory of tools, tool components, raw materials, and consumables.

Implement traceability for tools, components, and tool performance metrics.

Collaborate with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and NPD teams for trials and validation of new tools.

Manage vendor development and outsourcing of tool manufacturing when in-house capacity is limited.

Competencies

1. Strong expertise in Tool Design & Development, specifically for sheet metal, machining, fabrication, die-casting, and assembly tooling.

2. Ability to read and interpret AutoCAD / Solid Works drawings; capable of providing accurate technical solutions to production teams.

3. Hands-on experience and knowledge of various manufacturing operations:

CNC machining, Laser cutting, Sheet metal fabrication, Welding (TIG/MIG/Spot), Surface grinding, Milling, Lathe, Cylindrical grinding,Other tool-room processes

4. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership capability, and production support mindset.

5. Knowledge of quality standards and tolerances for rail industry components.

Experience

10 to 15 years in Tool Design, Tool Manufacturing, and Tool Maintenance — preferably in Railways, Rail Coach Interior Components, Sheet Metal, or Precision Tooling industries.
