Job Description

Description

This is an

entry-level/early career professional role

in Applied Sciences focused on

Thermal and Fluid Systems Engineering

. The role utilizes core competencies in thermal and fluid sciences to develop, analyze, and apply analytical and experimental techniques to support system performance and architecture decisions. The goal is to drive the development of

highly effective, environmentally friendly, and competitive Cummins products

.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate system and component performance issues related to thermal and fluid sciences; recommend and implement solutions under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Identify exhaust aftertreatment modeling needs in collaboration with aftertreatment functional and system integration teams.
  • Plan and prioritize model development efforts to meet identified needs.
  • Develop and evaluate engine exhaust aftertreatment models and tools.
  • Collaborate with major catalyst suppliers on functional model development and implementation.
  • Deploy modeling technologies to support Analysis-Led Design (ALD) in emission solutions.
  • Train and support internal users on Cummins’ aftertreatment modeling tools.
  • Apply simulation software and tools (e.g., AVL-Cruise M, MATLAB/SIMULINK, Python) to support project goals.
  • Participate in engineering processes such as Pre Program Planning (PPP), Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), and Engineering Standard Work (ESW).
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and support decisions with data-driven insights.
  • Own problem resolution for moderately complex engineering problems with increasing scope and responsibility over time.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing within the team.

Responsibilities

Technical and Functional Competencies

  • Thermodynamics and Energy Conversion Systems : Analyze and interpret performance of IC engines, fuel cells, and batteries.
  • Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer : Evaluate and predict thermal system behavior.
  • Modeling and Simulation : Use tools and data to optimize system/component design.
  • Product Problem Solving and Failure Mode Avoidance : Identify, assess, and resolve engineering problems.
  • Requirements Engineering & Systems Thinking : Translate stakeholder needs into actionable, verifiable requirements.
  • Statistical Methods : Analyze technical data using statistical inference and regression methods.
  • Technical Documentation : Effectively document and share engineering knowledge.
  • Product Development Execution : Coordinate and support product development lifecycle activities.
  • Controls Engineering : Understand and specify control architectures in thermal systems.

Core Cummins Capabilities

  • Collaborates – Works effectively with others across boundaries to achieve common goals.
  • Communicates Effectively – Adjusts communication style to match the needs of various audiences.
  • Decision Quality – Makes timely, well-informed decisions based on data and engineering judgment.
  • Drives Results – Consistently achieves goals even under challenging conditions.
  • Self-Development – Seeks learning opportunities and challenges to grow professionally.
  • Values Differences – Respects and leverages diversity of thought, background, and culture.

Preferred Skills And Experience
