Description
Key Responsibilities Decontamination: Receive, sort, and clean contaminated surgical instruments and medical equipment from various hospital departments. Perform manual and mechanical cleaning using appropriate detergents, multi-enzyme solutions, ultrasonic cleaners, and washer-disinfectors, strictly adhering to established protocols and manufacturer's instructions. Operate and monitor decontamination equipment, ensuring proper functionality and reporting any malfunctions immediately. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other contaminants. Inspection, Assembly, and Packaging: Inspect all instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and integrity (e.g., sharpness, cracks, defects). Perform function testing of devices and report any damaged or malfunctioning items. Assemble instrument sets and trays according to predefined checklists, ensuring all components are present and correctly arranged. Select appropriate packaging materials (e.g., sterilization wrap, pouches) and techniques for each item to maintain sterility. Label packages accurately with content, sterilization date, expiry date, and other required information. Sterilization: Load and operate various sterilization equipment, including high-temperature sterilizers (e.g., steam autoclaves) and low-temperature sterilizers (e.g., H2O2 gas plasma, Ethylene Oxide - ETO), according to established cycles and manufacturer guidelines. Perform daily biological and chemical indicator tests (e.g., Bowie-Dick test, biological spore tests) to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of sterilizers. Maintain accurate records of all sterilization cycles, including physical, chemical, and biological indicator results. Report any sterilization failures or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor immediately. Sterile Storage and Distribution: Receive sterile materials from sterilizers after successful completion of cycles and verification of quality indicators. Store sterile items in designated sterile storage areas, maintaining optimal environmental conditions (e.g., controlled temperature and humidity, positive air pressure). Ensure proper inventory rotation (first-in, first-out) to minimize expiration of sterile supplies. Distribute sterile instruments and supplies to user departments efficiently and as per demand, utilizing dispatch windows or dumbwaiters. Documentation and Quality Assurance: Maintain meticulous records of all decontamination, sterilization, and distribution processes, including logs, checklists, and inventory. Adhere strictly to all hospital policies, procedures, and national/international standards for sterilization and infection control. Participate in quality assurance activities and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the CSSD. Identify and report any non-compliance issues or deviations from established protocols. Safety and Maintenance: Follow all health and safety regulations and procedures for personal safety and the safety of others in the workplace. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of CSSD equipment and the department area to maintain a high standard of cleanliness. Report any equipment malfunctions, deficiencies, or safety hazards. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate effectively with medical staff, nursing staff, and other hospital departments to ensure the timely availability of sterile supplies. Communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues and other healthcare professionals. Participate in departmental meetings and in-service education programs.
