Civil Engineer - Substation Construction & Bay Works Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Civil Engineer to join our team, specializing in the planning, design, and construction supervision of high-voltage indoor and outdoor substations and associated bay works. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in civil and structural engineering as applied to utility and power infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Planning
- Site Evaluation and Selection: Conduct and/or oversee site investigations, including topographical surveys, geotechnical assessments, and hydrological studies, to determine site feasibility and inform design.
- Civil Design: Develop detailed civil engineering designs for both Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) indoor substations and Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS) outdoor substations, including:
- Foundation Design: Design of foundations for major equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, reactors), transmission line gantries, and control buildings, accounting for soil conditions and dynamic loads (seismic, wind).
- Site Grading and Drainage: Prepare grading plans, storm water management systems, and oil containment systems (e.g., transformer oil containment pits/sumps) to comply with environmental regulations.
- Access and Infrastructure: Design of site access roads, security fencing, boundary walls, and underground utility/cable trench routing.
- Structural Design: Perform or review structural analysis and design for control buildings, switchgear buildings, equipment support structures, and firewalls using relevant codes (e.g., ASCE, IBC, local codes).
- Bay Works: Specifically manage the civil and structural scope for individual substation bays, ensuring proper placement, clearances, and structural support for primary equipment and bus systems.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare comprehensive technical specifications, scope of work documents, Bill of Quantities (BoQ), and cost estimates for civil works.
Construction & Project Management
- Contractor Management: Oversee and manage civil contractors, ensuring adherence to design specifications, quality standards, and project timelines.
- Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC): Implement and monitor QA/QC procedures for all civil activities, including concrete pouring, structural steel erection, earthworks, and foundation setting.
- Site Supervision: Provide on-site technical supervision, resolve field issues and discrepancies between design drawings and actual site conditions, and approve Material Submittals.
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all civil construction activities comply with rigorous safety, health, and environmental (HSE) standards, particularly within the sensitive environment of an energized utility site.
- Progress Monitoring: Track and report on construction progress, managing schedule and budget performance for the civil scope of the project.
Coordination & Compliance
- Inter-Disciplinary Coordination: Liaise closely with electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure seamless integration of civil works with all substation equipment, cable routing, grounding, and protective systems.
- Regulatory Compliance: Secure necessary permits and approvals from local authorities and ensure that all designs and construction methodologies comply with relevant national and local codes (e.g., NESC, NEC, building codes).
- As-Built Documentation: Prepare and verify "As-Built" drawings and documentation for all completed civil works.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- Education: Diploma in Civil or Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Experience: Minimum 3+ years of progressive experience in civil engineering, with significant experience focused on the design and construction of electrical substations (both outdoor AIS and indoor GIS).
- Bay Works Experience: Proven experience with the specific civil requirements for substation bays and switchyard equipment.
Technical Skills
- Design Software Proficiency: Expertise in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation) and structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD Pro, RISA-3D).
- Code Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of civil and structural design codes, standards (e.g., ACI, AISC), and utility-specific standards.
- Geotechnical & Foundation Design: In-depth knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical reports, and designing various foundation types (e.g., deep, shallow) for heavy static and dynamic equipment loads.
Soft Skills
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical report writing and effective liaison with project stakeholders (clients, contractors, utility operators).
- Problem-Solving: Proven ability to troubleshoot and creatively resolve complex construction and design challenges in the field.
- Project Management: Strong organizational and project management skills to handle multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines.
