Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities of a Safety Officer in the Automobile Industry

1. Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification

  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections across production lines, assembly areas, and paint shops
  • Identify potential hazards related to machinery, chemicals, and ergonomic risks
  • Perform Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and implement corrective actions

2. Compliance & Safety Standards

  • Ensure adherence to local and national safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, Factories Act)
  • Maintain compliance with automotive industry-specific safety protocols
  • Monitor Permit to Work (PTW) systems for high-risk activities like welding, confined space, and electrical work

3. Policy Implementation

  • Develop and enforce site-specific safety policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Update safety manuals and emergency response plans based on operational changes

4. Training & Awareness

  • Conduct safety induction programs for new employees and contractors
  • Organize regular toolbox talks, fire drills, and mock evacuation exercises
  • Provide training on PPE usage, chemical handling, and machine guarding

5. Emergency Preparedness

  • Establish and maintain emergency response teams
  • Ensure availability and functionality of fire extinguishers, alarms, and first-aid kits
  • Coordinate with local emergency services when required

6. Incident Investigation & Reporting

  • Investigate accidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions
  • Prepare detailed reports with root cause analysis and preventive measures
  • Maintain injury logs and submit reports to relevant authorities

7. Safety in Manufacturing Processes

  • Monitor safety during stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly operations
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of hazardous materials (e.g., paints, solvents, lubricants)
  • Oversee ergonomics and safe material handling practices to reduce repetitive strain injuries

8. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain safety records, inspection checklists, and training logs
  • Generate weekly/monthly safety performance reports for management review
  • Track and analyze safety KPIs (e.g., LTIFR, TRIR)
