Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Safety Compliance and Monitoring

  • Ensure Compliance

    : Verify that the landfill site complies with local, national, and international safety, environmental, and health regulations (e.g., Shops and Establishment OSHA, ISO 45001 if any).
  • Site Inspections

    : Conduct regular safety inspections to identify and mitigate hazards, such as mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, gas leaks, unstable waste, or fire risks.
  • Permits and Documentation

    : Maintain records of permits, licenses, and safety-related documents.

2. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

  • Risk Assessments

    : Carry out risk assessments for landfill operations, including waste handling, machinery use, and exposure to hazardous substances, work at heights.
  • Hazard Management

    : Identify physical, biological, and chemical hazards, and implement measures to minimize risks.
  • Permit to Work System

    : Implement Permit to Work System for non-routine and high-risk activities.

3. Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Emergency Plans

    : Develop and update emergency response plans to address incidents such as fires, gas leaks, or waste spills.
  • ERT Coordination

    : Collaborate with Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) to ensure preparedness and training for emergencies.
  • Drills and Simulations

    : Conduct regular fire drills and emergency response simulations as per EPR plan.

4. Training and Awareness

  • Worker Training

    : Organize safety training programs for site workers, earth mover operators, tipper truck drivers on various topics like proper PPE use, hazardous waste handling, and first aid. Prepare Annual training Calendar.
  • Toolbox Talks

    : Conduct daily or weekly safety briefings to address site-specific risks and updates.
  • Induction Programs

    : Oversee EHS induction for new employees, contractors, and visitors to the site.

6. PPE and Equipment Management

  • PPE Compliance

    : Ensure all workers are provided with and use appropriate PPE, such as gloves, helmets, and masks.
  • Equipment Safety

    : Inspect and maintain safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, gas detectors, and rescue tools.

7. Reporting and Documentation

  • Incident Reporting

    : Investigate and report accidents, near-misses, and unsafe practices to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
  • Safety Audits

    : Conduct periodic safety audits and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Compliance Reports

    : Submit required safety and environmental compliance reports to regulatory authorities.

8. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Community Safety

    : Engage with local communities to address concerns about landfill operations and safety measures.
  • Regulatory Bodies

    : Liaise with regulators during inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.

9. Continuous Improvement

  • Safety Enhancements

    : Recommend and implement improvements to safety systems, processes, and technologies.
  • Sustainability Goals

    : Align safety practices with environmental sustainability objectives, such as waste-to-energy projects or reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
