Jewellery Industry Safety Officer.

his job description is for a Safety Officer in the Mumbai jewellery industry, which involves specific hazards related to precious metals and stones, chemicals, and precision machinery. This role requires strong adherence to local Mumbai and Maharashtra safety regulations, in addition to national standards.

Position overview

The Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety protocols to ensure a secure working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors within a jewellery manufacturing facility. The officer will be responsible for mitigating risks and ensuring compliance with all statutory requirements, especially those specific to industrial processes involving hazardous materials and precision equipment.

Key responsibilities

· Risk assessment and hazard management: Conduct thorough and regular risk assessments of all manufacturing processes, including casting, electroplating, polishing, and chemical handling. Identify, evaluate, and control potential hazards.

· Policy and procedure development: Develop and update safety policies, procedures, and guidelines that are compliant with the Factories Act of 1948 and other relevant Indian laws.

· Safety training and awareness: Organize and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all employees, including new hires. Cover topics specific to the jewellery industry, such as chemical handling, machine safety, fire prevention, and emergency response.

· Inspections and audits: Conduct frequent inspections and audits of the factory premises to ensure compliance with established safety protocols and to identify non-conformities.

· Incident investigation and reporting: Investigate all workplace accidents, near-miss incidents, and occupational diseases to determine root causes and implement effective corrective and preventive actions.

· Emergency response: Develop and maintain emergency preparedness plans, including fire evacuation procedures and drills, specifically tailored to the facility's layout and processes.

· Regulatory compliance: Stay up-to-date with changes in Indian and Maharashtra safety laws and liaise with government bodies, such as the Department of Factories and Boilers, as required.

· Safety documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and compliance data.

· Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Oversee the selection, maintenance, and proper use of PPE for all employees.

· Material and waste management: Ensure the safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials and chemical waste, which is a key concern in jewellery making.

· Collaborate with management: Work closely with department heads and management to integrate safety practices into daily operations and foster a proactive safety culture.

Qualifications and skills

· Education: A Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field is typically required. A Diploma in Industrial Safety, such as a PDIS from a recognized institute, is often mandatory.

· Experience: Proven experience as a Safety Officer, preferably within a manufacturing environment. Experience in the jewellery or a related precision manufacturing industry is highly advantageous.

· Certifications: Professional certifications from bodies like NEBOSH or IOSH are highly valued and can be preferred.

· Technical knowledge: In-depth knowledge of Indian safety laws and regulations, particularly the Factories Act. Familiarity with safety management systems is a plus.

· Interpersonal skills: Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively train employees and collaborate with all levels of the organization.

· Problem-solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify risks and implement practical solutions.

· Attention to detail: A diligent and vigilant mindset to strictly enforce safety procedures and notice potential hazards.

Language: As per the Factories Act, the officer should have knowledge of the language understood by the majority of workers, making Marathi and Hindi essential for Mumbai.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹65,000.00 - ₹75,000.00 per month
