PCB Design Engineer

1. Role Purpose

To design and develop printed circuit boards (PCBs) that meet electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements, ensuring product reliability, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with industry standards.

2. Key Responsibilities

• PCB Schematic & Layout
• Interpret circuit schematics provided by design engineers.
• Create PCB layouts using CAD tools (Altium, OrCAD, Allegro, KiCad, etc.).
• Define component placement, routing, layer stack-up, and signal integrity.
• Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & Assembly (DFA)
• Optimize designs for manufacturability and testability.
• Ensure PCB layout adheres to IPC standards.
• Collaborate with fabrication vendors for feasibility and cost control.
• Documentation & Release
• Generate Gerber files, Bill of Materials (BOM), drill files, and assembly drawings.
• Maintain version control and release documents for production.
• Testing & Validation
• Support prototype bring-up, debugging, and testing.
• Resolve PCB-related issues during production and field usage.
• Cross-functional Collaboration
• Work closely with hardware engineers, mechanical engineers, and production teams.
• Provide design inputs to firmware/software teams regarding hardware limitations.

3. Key Deliverables

• Accurate PCB schematic and layout files.
• Verified Gerber and fabrication files.
• Complete PCB documentation package (BOM, Assembly drawings, Drill files, Netlist).
• Design review reports and compliance checklists.
• Support for prototypes and design iterations.

4. Required Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency in PCB CAD tools (Altium Designer, OrCAD, Allegro, KiCad, etc.).
• Strong understanding of electronics fundamentals and circuit design.
• Knowledge of signal integrity, EMI/EMC, high-speed design, and power distribution.
• Familiarity with IPC standards for PCB design and manufacturing.
• Good problem-solving and debugging skills.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

5. Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Electronics, Electrical, or related fields.
• Experience: 0–2 years (Junior), 2–5 years (Engineer), 5+ years (Senior).

6. Performance Indicators (KPIs)

• Accuracy and quality of PCB designs (error-free Gerber release).
• On-time delivery of design outputs.
• Compliance with DFM/DFA/DFT guidelines.
• Reduction in PCB re-spins and design errors.
• Collaboration effectiveness with cross-functional teams.

7. Growth Path

PCB Design Engineer → Senior PCB Design Engineer → Lead PCB Designer → Hardware Design Manager
