Job Description

Job Summary:

Manager – SQL DBA

Key Responsibilities:

Team & Project Leadership:

  • Lead and mentor a team of SQL Server DBAs, providing guidance, performance feedback, and professional development.
  • Plan and manage database projects including upgrades, migrations, security audits, and capacity planning.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Development, DevOps, Security, and Business Analysts.
  • Create and manage staffing plans, schedules, and resource allocations.

Operational Excellence:

  • Oversee daily database administration tasks including monitoring, maintenance, and incident response.
  • Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies are in place and tested (e.g., AlwaysOn, log shipping).
  • Establish and enforce database policies, standards, and procedures.

Performance & Optimization:

  • Review and optimize database performance and SQL queries.
  • Manage indexing strategies, partitioning, and storage planning.
  • Conduct regular health checks, capacity analysis, and tuning.

Security & Compliance:

  • Enforce data security policies, access control, and encryption.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, SOX).
  • Manage audit processes and reporting.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Provide regular status updates and KPIs to IT leadership.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of database infrastructure, configurations, and processes.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in SQL Server database administration.
  • 2+ years in a DBA team leadership or management role.

Technical Expertise:

  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (2016/2019/2022).
  • Proven experience in high availability, disaster recovery, and replication technologies.
  • Strong understanding of performance tuning, execution plans, and T-SQL.
  • Experience with cloud-based databases (Azure SQL, AWS RDS) is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with SSIS, SSRS, SSAS is a plus.
  • Knowledge of automation and scripting (PowerShell, etc.).

Soft Skills:

  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
  • Microsoft Certified: SQL Server Database Administrator
  • ITIL, PMP, or similar certifications (for process and project management) are a plus.
