Job Description

1. Position Summary

The Infection Control Nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring infection prevention and control (IPC) activities across the hospital. This role ensures a safe, hygienic, and regulatory-compliant environment for mothers, newborns, children, patients, visitors, and healthcare staff. The ICN collaborates with clinical and non-clinical departments to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and maintain high standards of patient safety.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Surveillance & Monitoring

  • Conduct daily surveillance of hospital-acquired infections in all departments (NICU, PICU, Labour Room, OT, Wards).
  • Monitor device-associated infections (e.g., CLABSI, VAP, CAUTI) and report trends.
  • Track outbreaks and unusual infection patterns; initiate prompt containment measures.
  • Maintain updated infection control databases, logs, and dashboards.

B. Audits & Inspections

  • Perform routine audits for:
  • Hand hygiene compliance
  • Biomedical waste management
  • Sterilization & disinfection processes
  • Isolation precautions
  • Housekeeping, laundry, and kitchen hygiene
  • Audit NICU/ PICU aseptic practices and labour room protocols.
  • Record findings and share actionable improvement reports with department heads.

C. Infection Prevention Practices

  • Ensure adherence to standard precautions and transmission-based precautions.
  • Monitor sterilization cycle indicators, autoclave performance, and CSSD documentation.
  • Validate and monitor cleaning and fumigation protocols in OTs and procedure rooms.
  • Oversee vaccination compliance for all hospital staff (e.g., Hepatitis B, COVID-19).

D. Training & Awareness

  • Conduct regular training sessions for nursing, housekeeping, clinical, and support staff on:
  • Hand hygiene practices
  • PPE usage
  • Biomedical waste segregation
  • Aseptic techniques
  • Needle-stick injury management
  • Spill management protocols
  • Promote infection control awareness events (e.g., Hand Hygiene Day).

E. Policy & Protocol Development

  • Assist in formulating and updating IPC policies, guidelines, SOPs, and checklists.
  • Ensure compliance with national guidelines such as:
  • NABH standards
  • IPC guidelines by MoHFW, ICMR
  • Biomedical Waste Management Rules
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and review IPC metrics.

F. Outbreak Management

  • Identify and investigate potential outbreaks in NICU, wards, or labour room.
  • Coordinate sample collection and lab liaison.
  • Recommend isolation, cohorting, or other containment measures.
  • Prepare incident reports and root-cause analyses (RCA).

G. Reporting

  • Submit weekly & monthly infection control reports to ICO and management.
  • Maintain records of needle-stick injuries, staff exposures, and PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis).
  • Document HAI rates and compliance audit scores.

3. Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: B.Sc Nursing / GNM (Preference: Specialization or certification in Infection Control).
  • Experience:
  • Minimum 1–3 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Prior infection control experience preferred, especially in mother & child or multispecialty hospital.
  • Certifications (Preferred):
  • Infection Control Certification (e.g., CIC, ICN training, NABH workshops).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).

4. Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of hygiene standards, aseptic techniques, and IPC regulations.
  • Excellent observational and audit skills.
  • Good communication skills for training & staff engagement.
  • Ability to handle outbreak situations calmly and proactively.
  • Proficiency in documentation and data management.
  • Team coordination and cross-functional collaboration.

5. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Hand hygiene compliance rate
  • Reduction in device-associated infection rates
  • Compliance with biomedical waste segregation
  • Completion of IPC audits and staff training
  • Timely reporting of IPC data
  • Effective outbreak prevention and response

6. Working Conditions

  • Requires interaction with patients, newborns, children, staff, and hospital departments.
  • May require extended hours during outbreaks, audits, or emergencies.
  • Mandatory adherence to PPE and safety protocols.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹12,000.00 - ₹18,000.00 per month
