Job Description

Position Title: GPR Simulation Intern – Data Modelling using gprMax Location: IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF) Employment Type: Internship (2-month) Reporting To: Technology Manager - Geo Intel Lab, IITTNiF Working Days: Six days a week (Monday to Saturday) Office Timings: 8:45 AM – 6:45 PM Roles and Responsibilities: 1. GPR Simulation using gprMax: Design and simulate Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scenarios using the open-source tool gprMax. Develop 2D and 3D models of subsurface environments with various materials, geometries, and targets (e.g., pipes, voids, cables). Conduct controlled parametric studies to analyze the effect of signal frequency, antenna configuration, and soil properties. 2. Scenario Development and Customization: Build realistic models for underground utilities, pavement layers, rebar detection, and other subsurface structures. Incorporate physical parameters such as dielectric permittivity, conductivity, and layer heterogeneity. Simulate clutter, noise, and real-world constraints to approximate field conditions. 3. Data Analysis and Visualization: Post-process synthetic radargrams using appropriate tools (MATLAB, Python, or built-in gprMax utilities). Compare simulated results with real-world data to validate models. Visualize and annotate simulation outputs to support interpretation and learning. 4. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain a simulation logbook including input parameters, mesh settings, and outcomes. Prepare technical documentation, visual summaries, and structured results for presentations and publications. Contribute to development of a simulation dataset library for training and research purposes. 5. Collaboration and Support: Coordinate with field and software development interns to integrate simulation results into broader platform development. Provide synthetic datasets for algorithm testing and platform demonstrations. Participate in group discussions and technical review meetings. Qualification: Essential: Bachelor's or Master’s degree (pursuing or recently completed) in Geophysics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Preferable Qualifications: Prior experience with gprMax or other FDTD-based electromagnetic simulation tools. Good understanding of GPR theory, wave propagation, and subsurface electromagnetic properties. Familiarity with MATLAB, Python (NumPy, Matplotlib), or similar data visualization libraries. Exposure to high-performance computing (HPC), Linux, or scripting for simulations is an advantage. Desired Traits: Strong theoretical foundation and interest in modelling and simulation. Detail-oriented with a methodical approach to building and testing models. Capable of working independently and managing iterative simulation workflows.
