Job Description

Position Title: GPR Field and Data Processing Intern – Underground Utility Mapping Location: IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF) Employment Type: Internship (2-month) Reporting To: Technology Manager - Geo Intel Lab, IITTNiF Working Days: Six days a week (Monday to Saturday) Office Timings: 8:45 AM – 6:45 PM Roles and Responsibilities: 1. Field Data Acquisition: Support in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) field surveys focused on underground utility detection. Assist in site reconnaissance, layout planning, and systematic data collection. Operate GPR/EPL equipment, mark data acquisition paths, and ensure proper GPS referencing. 2. Equipment Setup and Maintenance: Ensure correct configuration and calibration of GPR systems before each survey. Handle equipment transportation, battery charging, and sensor care. Conduct pre- and post-survey checks to ensure data quality and hardware integrity. 3. Data Processing and Analysis: Process raw GPR data using industry-standard or custom-developed software. Identify subsurface features such as pipelines, cables, and ducts. Annotate and organize datasets with appropriate metadata and field notes. 4. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain field logs, daily activity sheets, and site maps. Prepare field reports with annotated radargrams, interpretations, and observations. Share data summaries and contribute to research documentation as required. 5. Operational and Team Support: Collaborate with research and development teams for integrated project delivery. Assist in training sessions and demonstrations for GPR usage and interpretation. Participate in logistical planning for multi-location surveys. 6. Safety and Compliance: Follow safety protocols during equipment handling and field movement. Ensure secure data handling and respect confidentiality protocols. Be aware of and compliant with local rules for surveying in public or private spaces. Qualification: Essential: Bachelor's degree (pursuing or recently completed) in Geophysics, Applied Geophysics, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Preferable Qualifications: Prior experience with GPR instruments such as IDS, Mala, or GSSI. Understanding of underground utility detection principles and field methods. Familiarity with GPR processing software (ReflexW, GPR-SLICE, Radan, etc.). Basic knowledge of geospatial tools (QGIS, Google Earth, etc.) and mapping practices. Ability to ride a two-wheeler and/or operate basic utility vehicles for field mobility. Desired Traits: Physically fit and willing to work in outdoor environments for extended hours. Observant, detail-oriented, and capable of interpreting geophysical data. Quick learner with a proactive attitude toward problem-solving.
