Role Description

Freelance Senior Data Engineer

Key Responsibilities

Data Integration & Processing:
Architect and implement reliable pipelines to ingest and transform high-volume healthcare data from sources such as
EHR, clinical systems, research databases, and external feeds
.
ETL/ELT Development (Azure + Databricks):
Build and optimize ETL/ELT workflows in
Azure
and
Databricks
to ensure data quality, consistency, integrity, and traceability.
Cloud Data Platform:
Implement cloud-native data solutions leveraging services such as
Databricks
and
Azure SQL Database
(and related Azure data services where required).
Data Governance & Security:
Apply governance standards, access controls, encryption, auditing, and compliance practices to protect sensitive healthcare data (HIPAA/GDPR).
Performance Monitoring:
Monitor pipeline performance, troubleshoot failures, and optimize for cost, reliability, and scalability.
Collaboration & Leadership:
Translate stakeholder requirements into technical solutions; provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior/associate data engineers.
Continuous Improvement:
Improve team workflows, adopt best practices, and stay updated on modern data engineering and transformation patterns.
Support additional duties aligned to unit/department needs.

Required Qualifications

4+ years
of experience in data engineering / database management / related roles (more preferred for “Senior” scope).
Hands-on experience delivering ETL/ELT pipelines in
Azure and Databricks
.
Experience working in a
healthcare or research environment
with regulated data.
Ability to lead moderately complex projects with minimal oversight.
EPIC Clarity Data Model
exposure preferred/required (must be completed within
6 months
of start, if not already completed).
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Information Systems or equivalent practical experience.
