Position Overview

Controller with strong property accounting expertise

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience as a Controller, a deep understanding of real estate accounting (US GAAP and/or tax-basis), and the ability to manage complex financial structures involving loan agreements, equity arrangements, and multiple legal entities. This is a senior role requiring attention to detail, timely execution, and the ability to ensure that all books and records align with legal and financial documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Oversight:

  • Manage the general ledgers and full accounting cycle for 20+ entities (operating, development, and land).
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly closes, reconciliations, and reporting.

Property Accounting:

  • Oversee accounting for multifamily operations, including revenue reconciliations, fixed asset schedules, construction-in-progress reports, capitalized vs expense classifications, security deposit reconciliations, month end entries, escrow schedules, etc.
  • Manage budgets vs. actuals and support investor and lender reporting.


Loan & Equity Compliance:

  • Review, interpret, and track loan documents and equity agreements to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure all debt covenants, interest accruals, draws, and equity contributions are accurately recorded.


Financial Controls:

  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure reporting integrity.
  • Coordinate with owners and external stakeholders as needed.


Reporting & Analysis:

  • Prepare financial statements (tax basis but close to GAAP) and internal management reports.
  • Provide variance analysis and investor reporting support.


Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with senior leadership and Indian team to ensure accuracy and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Support the integration of accounting with property management systems.

Qualifications

  • Experience:

    Minimum 8–10 years of progressive accounting experience with at least 3–5 years as a Controller (preferably in real estate).
  • Expertise:

    Strong background in property accounting, including multifamily operations, real estate development, and land assets.

 

Technical Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in US GAAP and/or tax-basis accounting.
  • Strong understanding of real estate financing (loans, draws, equity agreements, escrows, etc.).
  • Systems: Experience with property management/accounting software (QuickBooks Online or equivalent).

 

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple entities and meet strict deadlines.
