Reporting to Portfolio Director

About Packt

Packt's mission is to help the world put software to work in new ways, through the delivery of effective learning and information services to IT professionals. We are a technical publisher and learning provider with over 400 staff based across the globe, primarily in India and the UK. Our products have global relevance, and our multimedia portfolio includes over 7,000 books, e-books, audiobooks, and video courses. For more details, visit www.packtpub.com.

Within Packt, the publishing business is spread across a number of verticals, each focused on a particular domain. This role is for the Software Engineering & Architecture vertical.

About the Software Engineering & Architecture Vertical

The Software Engineering & Architecture (SEA) vertical is Packt’s home for serious engineers, deep tech enthusiasts, and system thinkers. Our portfolio is built around the belief that great engineers don’t just learn a tool; they master the paradigms, practices, and design principles that cut across languages, frameworks, and platforms.

Our top titles reflect this breadth and depth:

Core foundations & paradigms:

  • 50 Algorithms Every Programmer Should Know
  • Art of Efficient Programming
  • Python Object-Oriented Programming

Language mastery & performance:

  • C++ Memory Management
  • C++ High Performance
  • Mastering Go

Software design & architecture:

  • Software Architecture with C++
  • Clean Code in Python

At the same time, we recognize that AI is reshaping every role in software engineering. From coding assistants in the IDE to rethinking system design for LLMs and multi-agent workflows.

Our mission is to stay at the forefront of that change, ensuring our products prepare engineers not just to use AI tools, but to design systems that harness them effectively. This vertical is for engineers who want to go deeper, think sharper, and build systems that last.

Role Overview

As a Content Engineer in the SEA vertical, you will be responsible for owning the content lifecycle from concept to publication. You’ll work closely with Relationship Leads, Growth Leads, and Authors to shape each learning product so it delivers quality and user impact.

This means your role isn’t just about editing manuscripts. You are expected to engineer content at every stage of the product, such as evaluating book outlines, enhancing structure, coaching authors, ensuring each product is learner-friendly and insight-rich, creating optimal user-facing product information, and ensuring content is updated to meet user needs throughout its lifecycle.

The scope of your work goes beyond books. As part of our Books+ initiative, you will enhance book experiences with multi-format learning layers such as labs, code walkthroughs, and visual explainers. You’ll also contribute to non-book formats such as newsletters, conferences, and live workshops.

A great Content Engineer is driven by one question:

What format, structure, and delivery will make this content most useful to the engineer who needs it?

That mindset is what defines success in this role.

What You Will Do

Editorial & Product Development

  • Evaluate proposals and outlines with a focus on audience, JTBDs, and competitive differentiation.
  • Perform substantive edits to strengthen structure, clarity, flow, and learning outcomes.
  • Ensure content moves beyond definitions/tutorials to deliver practical insights, decision-making trade-offs, and real-world problem solving.

Author & Expert Collaboration

  • Coach authors to sharpen their teaching approach and leverage their unique strengths.
  • Ask clarifying questions, guide them to fill gaps, and ensure content avoids duplication of documentation.
  • Build trusted relationships that enable repeat collaborations with high-value experts.

Strategic & Multi-Format Contribution

  • Collaborate with Growth Leads and Relationship Leads on book launch and marketing campaigns.
  • Enhance the core book experience with multi-format learning layers such as interactive labs, visual explainers, video walkthroughs, quizzes, and code sandboxes.
  • Shape derived formats that go beyond the book, such as curated newsletters, short-form research explainers, live author AMAs, cohort-based learning sessions, and topical micro-events.

Research & Market Awareness

  • Track trends across software languages, frameworks, architecture practices, and GenAI-influenced workflows.
  • Benchmark against competing titles and apply market intelligence to strengthen positioning.
  • Feed insights into product strategy to keep Packt at the forefront of software engineering education.

Quality & Process Ownership

  • Own quality sign-off for every title and product you work on.
  • Balance speed-to-market with editorial depth, ensuring timely but robust products.
  • Maintain standards on plagiarism, consistency, and readability.
  • Share best practices across the editorial team to strengthen processes.

Who You Are

The work we do is fast-paced, demanding, and intellectually challenging. We are looking for dynamic candidates with an interest in technology and in helping tech professionals to learn. You will need strong oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and excellent organization and time-management skills. You will need to be proactive in troubleshooting and problem-solving, upbeat, enthusiastic, and motivated. You will be a demonstrated self-starter who is focused and calm under pressure.

  • A critical thinker who balances editorial precision with big-picture strategy.
  • Curious about software engineering and architecture, eager to explore new languages, frameworks, and design patterns.
  • Confident communicator and coach, comfortable collaborating across functions.
  • Adaptable and comfortable working on both long-cycle books and fast-cycle non-book products.

Must-have skills:

  • 3+ years in editorial/content development for technical or instructional products.
  • Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into structured, reader-friendly content.
  • Strong author/SME management and feedback skills.
  • Excellent English-language proficiency and editorial judgment.
  • Quality assurance mindset; confident in making calls on readiness, rework, or cancellation.
  • Willingness to own and drive the success of content beyond editing — including book enhancements such as labs, visuals, walkthroughs and derived formats such as newsletters, research briefs, and live sessions, ensuring each product serves its users effectively.

Good-to-have skills:

  • Familiarity with programming languages, frameworks, and software architecture practices.
  • Experience with multi-format content (events, newsletters, labs, research).
  • Awareness of AI tools in editorial workflows or software development contexts.
  • Project management experience in balancing multiple priorities.
