A technical writer is a professional responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining documentation that translates complex technical information into clear, concise content for a target audience. Their work makes products, services, and internal processes understandable for users, engineers, and other stakeholders. Core Duties and Responsibilities Key responsibilities of a technical writer typically include:

  • Research and Information Gathering: Interviewing subject matter experts (SMEs) like engineers, developers, and product managers, and reviewing product samples or design specifications to gain a deep understanding of the product or process.
  • Content Creation: Writing and revising various types of documents, such as:
  • User manuals and guides (how-to guides, troubleshooting)
  • API documentation and system specifications
  • Online help sections and FAQs
  • Internal process documentation (e.g., standard operating procedures)
  • Reports, white papers, and articles.
  • Editing and Proofreading: Ensuring all content is grammatically correct, consistent with company style guides, and free from errors.
