Job Description
We are seeking a Technical Lead to design and implement the technical framework for migrating data and integrations from a Cerner-based EHR environment to Epic.
This role combines deep hands-on technical expertise with architectural oversight — covering data pipelines, interoperability frameworks (HL7/FHIR), security compliance, and system integration with Epic’s ecosystem.
The Technical Lead will collaborate with project managers, data migration specialists, and Epic-certified teams to ensure the migration is accurate, secure, performant, and auditable.
Key Responsibilities
Design the technical architecture for Cerner-to-Epic data migration, including staging, ETL, and archival layers.
Define data mapping and transformation logic for clinical, administrative, and financial datasets.
Develop and maintain integration workflows using HL7, FHIR APIs, CCD, and other Epic-compatible standards.
Architect the data validation and reconciliation frameworks for completeness and integrity verification.
Contribute to the technical reference architecture and documentation required by client RFP and audit teams.
Build and optimize ETL pipelines for data migration (using tools like SSIS, Informatica, or custom Python/SQL pipelines).
Set up and manage staging databases, data warehouse connectors, and migration validation scripts.
Integrate Epic systems with external applications via APIs, HL7 interfaces, and FHIR endpoints.
Configure data archival systems for decommissioned Cerner modules and long-term data retention.
Support load testing, performance tuning, and failover testing to meet non-functional requirements.
Implement and validate access controls, authentication, and audit logging across all migration environments.
Work with InfoSec to ensure compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and NIST standards.
Conduct vulnerability and data exposure assessments for migration pipelines.
Ensure encryption at rest and in transit for all PHI-related data movements.
Develop monitoring dashboards and scripts for migrated systems (e.g., data reconciliation, ETL success rates).
Provide Tier 3 technical support during go-live and post-migration stabilization.
Create detailed handover documentation for operations, support, and audit teams.
Requirements
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
8+ years of experience in healthcare data integration, EHR migrations, or health IT infrastructure.
Deep expertise in:

Interoperability standards – HL7, FHIR, CCD/CCDA, REST APIs
Database systems – SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL
Epic data environments – Clarity, Caboodle, Chronicles (experience or exposure required)
Cerner data structures – Millennium, PowerChart, etc.
Hands-on experience in Python scripting or PowerShell automation for migration automation.
Familiarity with cloud hosting (AWS/Azure) and secure data transfer protocols (SFTP, HTTPS, VPN).
Experience implementing security controls and audit frameworks for PHI data.
Excellent documentation and collaboration skills.
Preferred Certifications
Epic Bridges or Epic Interconnect Certification (highly preferred)
HL7 / FHIR Certification (or proven project experience)
Database or ETL tool certification (Microsoft, Informatica, etc.)
Security-related certification (CISSP, CISM, or equivalent)
