Role Overview: Sub-editor Intern

The Sub-editor Internship offers an immersive experience where you will learn the crucial skills required to be the "last line of defense" for journalistic quality. You will support the editorial team in ensuring all content is accurate, clear, and professional before publication.

Key Responsibilities (Learning and Support)

• Copy Editing and Proofreading Support:

  Assist senior editors in performing meticulous checks of news articles, reports, and features for grammar, syntax, spelling, and clarity.

• Fact-Checking and Verification:

  Learn and actively support the systematic verification of claims, statistics, and quotes against credible sources, directly contributing to our credibility.

• Headline Optimization:

  Participate in crafting compelling, audience-engaging headlines and subheads, learning Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices for content distribution.

• Style Guide Adherence:

  Familiarize yourself with and apply TheSocialTalks' internal style guide, ensuring consistency in tone and formatting across platforms.

• CMS and Presentation:

  Support the editorial team in formatting stories within the Content Management System (CMS), including selecting and preparing appropriate images, captions, and visual elements.

• Editorial Collaboration:

  Participate in content planning and editorial meetings to understand workflow, story development, and deadline management.

• Ethical Learning:

  Actively uphold journalistic ethics and maintain fairness in all support tasks.

• Research & Reporting:

  Conduct preliminary research to support the editorial desk in developing context and background for news features.

Internship Details and Benefits

• Stipend:

  UNPAID [The internship begins as an unpaid opportunity, but there is potential for it to transition into a paid position based on performance during the internship period.]

• Duration:

  Minimum Three (3) Months

• Location:

  Remote or WFH

• Recognition:

  Upon successful completion, interns receive a

  Letter of Internship (LOI)

  .

• Recommendation:

  A meticulously crafted

  Letter of Recommendation (LOR)

  is provided, contingent upon exemplary performance.

• Path to Progression:

  Top-performing interns will have the possibility of advancing into positions within the core team, such as Team Lead, Sub Editor, or Lead Editor, based on management decisions.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in journalism, communication, English, or a related field.
• Exceptional command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation is mandatory.
• A strong, demonstrable enthusiasm for journalism and a keen eye for detail.
• Basic understanding of journalistic principles, ethics, and standards.
• Familiarity with digital media trends and a willingness to learn Content Management Systems (CMS).
• Excellent organizational skills and reliability in meeting deadlines.
• A passion for accurate, well-crafted reporting and contributing to a well-informed society.
