Site Engineer: Need to be prepared to handle a lot of responsibility because you will be asked to supervise projects from start to finish. You will be also expected to perform an organizational and technical role on construction projects where you apply designs and plans to a site. If you believe you can handle responsibility and enjoy the challenge that comes with being in charge, becoming a site engineer may be precisely what you are looking for. What Will I Be Doing? The work can be extremely varied and depends on whom you work for. You may be involved in civil, rail, road and other infrastructure projects for example. Typically, you can expect to work on large-scale projects ranging from the creation of a new shopping complex to the development of a new housing estate. Here are some of the work activities you may perform as a site engineer: Being the main technical adviser on a construction site where you will set out, survey and level the building site. Check plans and drawings to ensure all calculations are accurate. Making sure the work performed and materials used are as specified in the contract. Overseeing health & safety and quality control measures on the site. Liaising with subcontractors, clients and other professional staff. Negotiating the price of materials before ordering them and report to office for issuing PO. As you are part of the site management team, you will be asked to assume responsibility for health & safety and security on site and if anything goes wrong, you will be the person asked to explain the situation. What Else Do I Need To Know? You will act as the day-to-day manager and will be seen as the primary source of technical advice and quality control on the site. You need to plan the work to be performed and must organize things to ensure deadlines are met. The conditions and working environment vary enormously between projects. Your time will be divided between the office and the site and there is a chance you will have to work during inclement weather spells. It is also a fact that the office you will be in is likely to be less than comfortable. Travel is part of a site engineer’s life so you need to be mobile and be prepared to stay away from home. What Is The Career Path of a Site Engineer? Although it is possible to begin your career as soon as you complete the Leaving Cert, the vast majority of prospective site engineers will go to University. Most companies look for candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering although any technical or numerical-based degree will greatly aid your cause. If you studied subjects such as construction, structural or civil engineering, you will enhance your prospects. If you don’t have the proper maths or science qualifications, it may be possible to take a one year long foundation course. You will receive some training on-the-job but this depends on the employer. Assuming you belong to one of the professional engineering bodies, you will be expected to follow a continuous professional development program each year. Once you have a few years of experience, you may get to manage your own projects or become an assistant site manager. Career progression possibilities include senior engineer, site manager, project manager and contracts manager. The Role: The purpose of this role is to provide site-engineering duties for a number of projects within the region. The Site Engineer will establish the level and survey control for contracts and set out detailed works as per the contract drawings, ensuring that checks are made on a regular basis. Key Responsibilities: Site engineering Establish the level and survey control for contracts Set out detailed works as per the contract drawings, ensuring checks are carried out on a regular basis Ensure that records are accurate and comply with organizational and legal requirements Resolve any unexpected technical difficulties and other problems that may arise at any time Produce procurement schedules for the jobs and liaise with the procurement department/ Office to ensure site have adequate resources to complete the tasks Produce ITP’s (Inspection & Test Plan) and Task Briefings Produce 14 days works forecast, daily progress report, update daily attendance and Daily Expense Produce Site Diaries and Allocation Sheets Health, safety & environment Promote and comply with environmental compliance Deliver the works safely and to deadline Follow Company’s HSE Policies Quality Promote best practice Comply with Company procedures Ensure work is delivered defect/snag free Endeavour to spot and highlight value engineering opportunities Key measures & targets: Accurate and timely setting out of the works Timely handover of works and Quality records without outstanding defects Production of accurate records, drawing registers and weekly diaries Key relationships: Site team Customer technical representative Person Specification: The successful candidate is likely to meet all of the following criteria: Essential Previous experience of setting out on civil engineering projects Sound knowledge of construction methods, health and safety, and legal regulations Fully conversant with the use of total station and leveling instruments Degree/HNC qualified, or equivalent, in civil engineering Excellent communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively with both clients and staff Self-driven and results-oriented with a positive outlook Desirable · Experience in using AutoCAD and MS Office Temporary-works co-ordination · CSCS card · Cable avoidance training · First aid training Confined space training NEBOSH or IOSH
