Chemical Purchasing Expert

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Sourcing & Procurement

    • Lead the procurement of

      petrochemical feedstocks, catalysts, additives, solvents, and specialty chemicals

      from global suppliers.
    • Develop and execute sourcing strategies to optimize cost, quality, and supply continuity.
    • Monitor

      market trends

      (e.g., crude oil prices, geopolitical factors, trade regulations) impacting chemical availability and pricing.
  2. Supplier Management

    • Identify, evaluate, and onboard suppliers (domestic & international) with a focus on reliability, quality, and compliance.
    • Negotiate

      long-term contracts

      , pricing agreements (e.g., formula-based pricing), and payment terms.
    • Conduct supplier audits and performance reviews (OTIF, quality incidents).
  3. Risk Mitigation & Compliance

    • Manage supply chain risks (logistics delays, force majeure, supplier insolvency) through contingency planning.
    • Ensure compliance with

      REACH, TSCA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards

      for chemical procurement.
    • Monitor

      HSE (Health, Safety, Environment)

      requirements for hazardous material handling.
  4. Cost Optimization & Budgeting

    • Track price fluctuations in key commodities (e.g., ethylene, propylene, benzene) and implement hedging strategies.
    • Collaborate with R&D/Production to identify cost-saving alternatives (e.g., substitute materials).
  5. Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Work with

      Logistics, Operations, and Finance

      to align procurement with production schedules and inventory targets.
    • Partner with

      Legal

      to review contracts, Incoterms, and liability clauses.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education:

    Bachelors / Masters in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Supply Chain, or related field.
  • Experience:

    • 15+ years in

      chemical/petrochemical procurement

      (experience with olefins, polymers, aromatics, or catalysts is a plus).
    • Familiarity with

      ERP systems

      , e-procurement tools, and spend analytics.
  • Technical Knowledge:

    • Understanding of petrochemical value chains (refining, cracking, polymerization).
    • Knowledge of

      INCOTERMS, hazardous material logistics (ADR, IMDG)

      .
  • Soft Skills:

    Strong negotiation, stakeholder management, and crisis-resolution abilities.

Preferred Certifications

  • CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management)

  • APICS CPIM/CSCP
