Job Description

The Head of the Department (HoD) of Civil Engineering provides academic, administrative, and strategic leadership to the department. The HoD is responsible for ensuring excellence in teaching, research, innovation, consultancy, and extension activities while adhering to the standards prescribed by the University.

Leadership and management

  • Provide vision and leadership for curriculum development, program review, and implementation of outcome-based education (OBE).
  • Promote high-quality teaching, learning, and evaluation processes.
  • Lead, manage, and develop the teaching and research activities of the department.
  • Report to the university principal or management on departmental needs, such as faculty, staff, equipment, and resources.
  • Ensure the department's operations align with university policies and goals.
  • Convene and lead departmental staff meetings to discuss progress and address issues.
  • Appoint standing and special committees and handle their reports.


Academic and curriculum

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of the civil engineering curriculum.
  • Allocate subjects to faculty members, ensuring effective use of expertise.
  • Ensure timely preparation of timetables and lesson plans.
  • Implement and maintain high standards for teaching and academic quality.
  • Ensure that question papers are set according to guidelines and evaluated promptly.


Faculty and staff

  • Supervise and guide faculty members in their roles.
  • Support the professional development of junior faculty members.
  • Manage the daily workloads and requirements of both teaching and non-teaching staff.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and academic excellence within the department.


Research and outreach

  • Drive and lead impactful research in civil engineering areas.
  • Seek and secure external funding for research activities.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with other universities and industry.
  • Represent the department to external bodies and stakeholders.
  • Promote the department and enhance its international reputation.
  • Encourage faculty and students to undertake funded research projects, publications, patents, and innovations.
  • Build collaborations with government bodies, industries, and research organizations.
  • Promote consultancy and testing services in Civil Engineering (Structural Testing, Geotechnical Investigations, Environmental Assessments, etc.).
  • Collaborate with other departments within the institution on interdisciplinary projects or initiatives.
  • Conduct research and publish papers in reputed journals to contribute to the field of civil engineering.


Student affairs

  • Interact with students to understand their problems and find solutions in consultation with the principal.
  • Ensure student attendance is properly monitored and reported.
  • Promote a positive learning environment for all students.
  • Promote co-curricular and extracurricular activities such as technical fests, workshops, expert lectures, and industrial visits.
  • Oversee student advising, mentoring, career guidance, internships, and placement support.



Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage departmental operations including timetables, workload distribution, lab management, and academic schedules.
  • Supervise faculty, technical staff, and administrative personnel; oversee recruitment and performance appraisal.
  • Monitor departmental budgets, procurements, and utilization of research/laboratory grants.
  • Ensure safety protocols and maintenance of laboratories, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Ensure effective implementation of university policies, academic regulations, and examination procedures.
