Job Description

We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Medical Underwriter to join our team. This is a critical role responsible for evaluating complex medical and non-medical data to assess risk and determine appropriate insurance decisions. You will directly impact our business by setting the eligibility, coverage amount, and premium rates for applicants, ensuring decisions are fair, accurate, and compliant.

This is a full-time, permanent, and exclusively in-person position.


Key Responsibilities


  • Application Review:

     Thoroughly evaluate insurance applications, detailed medical reports, health records, and diagnostic tests.
  • Risk Assessment:

     Quantify the degree of medical risk associated with applicants to determine their insurability.
  • Decision Making:

     Classify applications and recommend 

    approval, modification (e.g., rate-up), or decline

     based on established underwriting guidelines.
  • Communication & Liaison:

     Liaise professionally with 

    medical professionals, agents, and internal departments

     to acquire necessary supplemental information.
  • Compliance & Accuracy:

     Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with company policies, legal regulations, and risk management principles.
  • Record Keeping:

     Maintain detailed, accurate underwriting records and documentation.
  • Continuous Improvement:

     Stay current on medical and insurance industry developments to improve processes and risk assessment tools.


Qualifications & Skills


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree

     in Life Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, or a related analytical field.
  • Preferred: Professional Certification in underwriting or insurance (LOMA, ALU, etc.).

Experience

  • Proven experience

     in life or health insurance underwriting is required.
  • Preferred:

     1–3 years of dedicated experience in medical underwriting.
  • Strong understanding of 

    risk assessment principles, policy terms, and claims processes.

Core Skills

  • Exceptional 

    analytical and decision-making skills.

  • High standard for 

    attention to detail and data accuracy.

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in 

    MS Office Suite

     and experience with insurance software tools
