Job Description

We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Medical Underwriter to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating medical and non-medical information to assess risk and determine appropriate insurance decisions for applicants. This is a full-time, permanent, in-person position.

Job Summary

The Medical Underwriter is responsible for evaluating medical and non-medical information to assess risk and determine the eligibility, coverage amount, and premium rates for insurance applicants. The role involves analyzing health reports, medical records, and related data to ensure fair and accurate underwriting decisions in line with company policies and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Application Review: Review and evaluate insurance applications, medical reports, and health records thoroughly.
  • Risk Assessment: Assess the degree of risk associated with applicants and determine their insurability.
  • Decision Making: Classify applications and recommend approval, modification, or decline based on established underwriting guidelines.
  • Communication & Liaison: Liaise with medical professionals, agents, and internal departments to obtain additional necessary medical information.
  • Compliance: Ensure all decisions comply with company policies, legal regulations, and risk management principles.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain detailed and accurate underwriting records and documentation.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and risk assessment tools.
  • Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on medical and insurance industry developments and changes.

Qualifications & Skills

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Certification in underwriting or insurance (preferred).

Experience

  • Proven experience in life or health insurance underwriting.
  • Preferred Experience: 1–3 years of experience in medical underwriting (life or health insurance).
  • Understanding of risk assessment, policy terms, and claims processes.

Core Skills

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a high standard for data accuracy.
  • Good communication and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and insurance software tools.
