Job Title: Electrician (Shipyard / Marine)
Location: as per desired Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi, Kerala, India
Department: Electrical / Outfitting / Maintenance
Reports to: Electrical Supervisor / Works Engineer / Project-in-Charge
Job Purpose
To carry out electrical installations, maintenance, repairs and commissioning of shipboard and shore‑side electrical systems, especially focusing on cable laying, cable termination, glanding, and related cable works, ensuring safety, quality and compliance with marine and yard standards.
Key Responsibilities
The Electrician will be responsible for (but not limited to):
Cable Laying & Pulling
Layout, route, pull and lay various types of electrical cables (power, control, instrumentation, communication) through cable trays, ducts, cableways, bulkheads and decks.
Ensure proper bending radius, adequate support, bundling/clamping of cables, keeping cable runs neat and accessible.
Use of cable laying tools, fish tapes, conduits, trays etc.
Cable Termination & Glanding
Terminate cables in junction boxes, switchgear/panels, control panels, motors, transformers etc. using ferrules, lugs, glands as per specification.
Carry out electrical terminations with required torque, insulation, sealing (glanding) for protection (environmental, flame, ingress etc.).
Ensure cable ends are properly stripped, crimped, soldered (if required), and terminated with proper insulation (heat shrink, boots, tapes etc.).
Testing & Commissioning
Perform continuity tests, insulation resistance (megger) tests, polarity, earth ground / bonding checks.
Use of tools like multimeters, megohmmeters, clamp meters, phase testers etc.
Assist in commissioning of electrical systems—power distribution, lighting, navigation, communication, control / instrumentation.
Maintenance & Repairs
Troubleshoot faults in cables, terminations, panels, connectors etc.
Repair or replace damaged cables, re‑terminate terminals, rectify loose connections, insulation breakdown etc.
Perform preventive maintenance of cable systems, ensuring clamps, trays, terminations are still intact.
Reading & Interpretation of Drawings / Specifications
Interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematic layouts, cable schedules, and general arrangement drawings.
Follow technical specifications, standards, manufacturer’s instructions during installation and terminations.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
Follow shipyard safety practices, PPE use, safe lifting, hot work, confined space entry where applicable.
Ensure that all works comply with relevant marine, electrical and classification society standards.
Maintain quality of work—neat terminations, correct labelling of cables, connectors, tidy cable routing etc.
Documentation & Reporting
Record test results, termination details, cable numbering / tagging, material usage.
Report progress, faults, and incidents to supervisors.
Assist in preparation of defect lists, installation checklists, commissioning records.
Teamwork & Coordination
Coordinate with other trades (pipefitters, structural, mechanical) for cable supports, cut‑outs, bulkhead penetrations etc.
Work under supervision, or lead small teams depending on seniority.
Liaise with project engineers, procurement for required materials (terminations, connectors, cables etc.).
Required Skills & Experience
To succeed in this role, the candidate should have:
Educational Qualification:
ITI (Electrician) / Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical certification.
Experience:
Minimum 3‑5 years (or more, depending on position level) of relevant experience in shipyard, marine, offshore, or heavy industrial environment. Must have demonstrable experience in cable laying, cable termination, glanding and testing.
Technical Skills:
Proficient with cable pulling, laying, dressing, bundling, support.
Good at various types of cable terminations (power, control, instrumentation), connectors, lugs, glands.
Ability to select correct tools and accessories for terminations and tests.
Experience with testing electrical continuity, insulation, earth/ground bonding etc.
Able to read and interpret wiring diagrams, cable schedules, plans and drawings.
Other Competencies:
Physical fitness to work in confined spaces, at heights, in damp or marine environment.
Manual dexterity, attention to detail.
Good communication skills to follow instructions and coordinate with team.
Commitment to safety and quality.
Desirable / Additional Attributes
Prior experience in ship repair / ship building with marine electrical systems.
Certification or familiarisation with classification society standards (e.g. IRS, ABS, DNV etc.).
Knowledge of marine‑grade cables, corrosion protection, cable sealing/glanding standards.
Experience in working with high voltage/low voltage systems, switchboards, motors etc.
Ability to use hand and power tools safely, and carry out work as per schedule and project requirements.
Working Conditions
Work may involve dry docks, ship holds, decks, wet / damp marine environments.
Exposure to heights, confined spaces, noise, heat, and movement (vessel motions if working on afloat vessels).
Shift duties, occasional overtime and weekend work depending on project delivery schedules.
Reporting & Performance Metrics
Timeliness of completion of cable laying / termination tasks as per project schedule.
Quality of terminations (tightness, insulation, sealing, no leakage or faults).
Number of defects/failure incidents post‑installation (e.g. loose connections, insulation failure etc.).
Adherence to safety and yard policies.
Efficiency in material usage, wastage control, proper tagging and documentation.
