Communications Director

Position Summary

The Communications Director, India will lead Girl Rising’s communications presence across India and play a key role in elevating the voices, stories, and impact of our programs, partners, and youth leaders. This is a hands-on role for a communicator who can both think strategically and execute independently.

This role will contribute to the overall communications strategy for Girl Rising, especially in India, and will lead its implementation in India. The Director will strengthen Girl Rising’s brand visibility in India and globally, cultivate media and influencer relationships, support donor communications, and work closely with our India-based program team to create impact stories for use across global channels.

Key Responsibilities

1. Brand Visibility & Media in India

• Build Girl Rising’s presence and credibility in India through proactive media outreach, storytelling, and partnerships
• Develop and nurture relationships with journalists, editors, influencers, and cultural figures
• Secure media coverage and speaking opportunities for Girl Rising’s India-based Co-CEO and Senior Director of Programs
• Support donor cultivation, especially in India, through tailored communications and relationship building

2. Storytelling & Content Development

• Work with the program team to identify and shape compelling stories of impact from the field
• Produce high-quality written and visual content for blogs, newsletters, social media, donor reports, and campaigns
• Ensure ethical, accurate, and inclusive representation of the communities we serve
• Write and edit materials such as press releases, op-eds, talking points, speeches, and case studies

3. Campaign & Communications Execution

• Support the VP of External Relations in executing global campaigns with locally relevant content and opportunities
• Adapt global messaging for India-based audiences, partners, and funders
• Develop India-specific communications initiatives tied to key moments (IDG, IWD, COP, etc.)

4. Digital & Social Support

• Contribute content for Girl Rising’s global digital channels on a regular basis
• Collaborate on social media planning and content calendars 
• Monitor audience engagement to inform future storytelling and campaigns

5. Cross-Organizational Collaboration

• Work closely with the Co-CEO (India), India program team, and global comms/development staff
• Manage consultants (PR, designers, video editors, etc.) as needed
• Help maintain message cohesion and brand consistency across regions

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of experience in communications, media, journalism, or public relations
• Demonstrated success securing media coverage and building brand presence
• Strong writer (in English and Hindi) and storyteller with a clear, compelling voice
• Experience crafting content for different audiences (press, donors, youth, partners, digital)
• Ability to manage multiple projects and work both independently and collaboratively
• Familiarity with India-based media, philanthropy, cultural influencers, and/or social impact ecosystem
• Comfortable working across time zones with a small team
• Deep belief in gender equity, education, and narrative change
