Job Description

Position: Boiler Operation Engineer

Specialization: Process Boilers

Qualification: BOE Certificate from Directorate of Boilers

Experience: 2 - 10 years (customizable)

Location: Mehsana, Gujarat

Department: Utilities / Process Steam Generation

Reporting To: Utility Manager / Plant Manager

1. Job Purpose

To ensure safe, continuous, and efficient operation of process boilers used for supplying steam to

various manufacturing and process units. The role focuses on precise steam demand management,

energy optimization, and strict compliance with IBR and process safety standards.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Boiler Operation & Steam Management

  • Operate and monitor process boilers such as fire-tube, water-tube, fluidized bed, or package

boilers used in process industries.

  • Ensure steam supply matches fluctuating process demands (batch/continuous operations).
  • Maintain stable boiler parameters—pressure, temperature, steam quality, fuel-air ratio, and

drum level.

  • Handle start-up, shutdown, and load adjustments as per SOPs.

B. Process Integration & Coordination

  • Coordinate with production teams (evaporators, dryers, reactors, sterilizers, heat exchangers,

etc.) for steam scheduling.

  • Ensure steam quality (dryness fraction, pressure stability) meets process requirements.
  • Troubleshoot steam distribution issues such as line drops, condensate return failure, steam trap

malfunction, etc.

C. Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance of process boilers and auxiliaries like feedwater pumps,

deaerators, air preheaters, economizers, and blowdown systems.

  • Identify issues related to fouling, scaling, tube leaks, burner misalignment, soot accumulation,

and pressure drops.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams for corrective actions.

D. Safety & Statutory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the Boiler Act, Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR), and guidelines from the

Directorate of Boilers.

  • Maintain daily log sheets, operation records, and statutory registers.
  • Conduct safety valve testing, boiler water sampling, and regular internal/external inspections.
  • Ensure safety in fuel handling (coal, husk, briquettes, PNG/LPG, diesel, etc.) and combustion

systems.

E. Energy Efficiency & Cost Optimization

  • Monitor fuel consumption and specific steam consumption for various processes.
  • Optimize combustion efficiency, reduce heat losses, and ensure maximum condensate return.
  • Propose improvements in boiler controls, automation, and energy recovery systems

(economizer, air preheater, heat recovery units).

F. Water Treatment & Steam Quality Control

  • Supervise feedwater and boiler water treatment systems (RO/DM plant, softener, chemical

dosing).

  • Ensure parameters like pH, TDS, hardness, DO, and phosphate levels meet boiler standards.
  • Work to prevent scaling, corrosion, and carryover which affect process equipment.

G. Documentation & Coordination

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly boiler performance reports.
  • Coordinate with Directorate of Boilers for annual inspections, renewals, tube replacements, and

certification formalities.

  • Maintain O&M manuals, SOPs, and risk assessments specific to process boiler operation.

3. Skills & Competencies Required

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of process boiler operation and steam distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of combustion systems for multi-fuel operations (gas, oil, biomass, coal).
  • Familiarity with boiler automation—PLC/SCADA, burner management systems (BMS), ID/FD fan

controls, and O2 trim systems.

  • Understanding of condensate recovery, steam traps, flash steam recovery, and heat integration.

Soft Skills

  • Ability to coordinate with multiple process departments.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good communication and shift-handling ability.
  • Safety-oriented and quality-focused mindset.

4. Qualification & Experience

  • Valid BOE Certificate from the Directorate of Boilers is mandatory.
  • Diploma/B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical/Electrical/Chemical Engineering preferred.
  • Experience in process industries such as chemical, food & beverage, textile, pharmaceutical,

paper, or manufacturing is an advantage.

5. Work Environment

  • Process plant and utility area with exposure to heat, noise, and rotating equipment.
  • Shift-based work with compulsory use of PPE.
