Anesthesia Coding Specialist
to join our healthcare revenue cycle team. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in anesthesia coding, a deep understanding of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS guidelines, and the ability to ensure accurate and compliant coding for anesthesia services. This role is critical in optimizing reimbursement, minimizing denials, and maintaining compliance with regulatory and payer-specific requirements.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and accurately code anesthesia-related medical records, including operative reports, anesthesia records, and physician documentation.
- Assign appropriate CPT anesthesia codes (00100-01999), modifiers, base units, time units, and qualifying circumstances in compliance with AMA and payer guidelines.
- Ensure correct application of anesthesia modifiers (AA, QK, QX, QY, QZ, AD, etc.) based on provider involvement and care models.
- Calculate anesthesia time accurately and ensure proper documentation to support billed units.
- Code diagnoses using ICD-10-CM to support medical necessity for anesthesia services.
- Review claims prior to submission to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with payer policies.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve coding-related denials and rejections related to anesthesia claims.
- Stay up to date with changes in anesthesia coding guidelines, CPT updates, payer rules, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate closely with billing, compliance, clinical, and revenue cycle teams to improve coding accuracy and turnaround time.
- Participate in internal and external audits, responding to queries and implementing corrective actions as required.
- Maintain productivity and quality benchmarks while adhering to HIPAA and confidentiality standards.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 2 to 15 years of hands-on experience in anesthesia coding within a healthcare or medical billing environment.
- Strong expertise in anesthesia coding concepts, including base units, time units, modifiers, and qualifying circumstances.
- In-depth knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding standards specific to anesthesia services.
- Familiarity with payer-specific anesthesia billing rules, including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers.
- Ability to interpret complex medical records and anesthesia documentation with high accuracy.
- Experience working with EHRs, coding software, and billing systems.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and compliance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Anesthesia and Pain Management Coder (CANPC), or equivalent certification.
- Experience handling audits, appeals, and denial management for anesthesia claims.
- Exposure to end-to-end revenue cycle processes related to anesthesia services
