AI Engineer (Healthcare AI Systems)

Role Overview
We are hiring an AI Engineer to design, build, and operate production AI systems supportingclinical, policy, and prior-authorization workflows in the U.S. healthcare ecosystem.This is neither a research role nor a prompt experimentation role. It is an engineering rolewhere you will build AI systems that must behave predictably, fail safely, and remain auditableunder HIPAA, SOC 2, and HITRUST-aligned controls.You will work on systems that process Protected Health Information (PHI) and influencedownstream healthcare decisions. AI outputs are evaluated for accuracy, traceability,confidence, failure handling, and audit readiness. You will own end-to-end AI pipelines, notisolated models.
What You Will Build
Clinical & Policy Intelligence
- Interpret clinical notes and patient records and medical/payer policy documents
- Extract structured facts:
○ Diagnoses, procedures, dates, and conditions.
○ Eligibility and coverage rules critical for supporting decisions
- Reconcile data across OCR outputs, structured inputs, and multiple documents
LLM-Based AI Pipelines
- Design multi-stage pipelines:
○ Input normalization, structured extraction, validation
○ Confidence scoring and fallback logic
- Ensure schema-validated outputs, constrained hallucinations and controlled
non-determinism
- Implement deterministic fallbacks for low-confidence outputs, model failures and
missing or ambiguous inputs
Evaluation, Monitoring & Drift
- Define evaluation frameworks precision/recall, error categorization & regression testing
- Monitor production systems for quality degradation, input drift and downstream
outcome changes
- Build feedback loops for human review and pipeline/prompt refinement
Integration & Productionization
- Integrate AI systems with backend services handling document ingestion, OCR pipelines
& prior-authorization workflows
- Design AI services with clear APIs, versioned outputs and backward compatibility
- Optimize for latency, cost, and throughput

- Prompting: structured, machine-readable outputs
- Pipelines: multi-step with validation and fallbacks
- Healthcare data: clinical notes, policies, OCR text
- Integration: backend APIs, schema/version control
- Observability: AI-specific logs, quality/latency metrics
Security, Privacy & Compliance
This role handles PHI. Compliance is a design constraint. We expect awareness of:
- HIPAA-aligned AI practices with minimal PHI exposure, no unnecessary data retention
& secure input/output handling
○ Traceability from output to input to document
○ Reproducible decisions & explainable records
- Frameworks: SOC 2 & HITRUST principles for AI systems
