Start by evaluating the person’s ability to build engaging and structured narratives. Ask for samples of past work or give a simple task like drafting a 30-second concept script for a product or a short film. Observe how they build flow, visual elements, and emotional tone in storytelling. You want someone who thinks in visuals and can turn a concept into a compelling video idea.
Check if they are hands-on with tools like Runway, Pika Labs, Sora, Kaiber, or similar platforms. Ask them to walk you through the AI tools they’ve used, how they combine tools (like using Midjourney for visuals, ElevenLabs for voice, and Runway for video), and what kind of results they’ve achieved. A good candidate will explain workflows clearly and show a balance between tool efficiency and creative direction.
Even when using AI, understanding composition, transitions, rhythm, and post-production techniques is essential. Ask to see their video editing work—preferably where they used AI assistance. Look for precision, smoothness, and how well they integrate motion graphics, text, or voiceovers. If possible, give a small test project using free versions of AI tools to see how they stitch the visuals together.
The person should understand the format needs of YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok. Ask what makes a video perform well on each platform and how they adapt the same video for different audiences. Also explore if they use AI tools for trend tracking, captioning, repurposing, or optimization—this shows they are thinking beyond just creation and into reach.
Finally, assess how quickly they pick up new tools and how they work with others. Ask what new AI tool or feature they learned recently and how they applied it. Give hypothetical scenarios—like working with a scriptwriter or a sound designer—and see how they’d coordinate. People who are self-motivated and can collaborate are crucial in fast-moving creative AI teams.
