The E&M & Surgery Coding Trainer is responsible for developing and delivering training programs for new and existing medical coders in Evaluation & Management (E&M) and Surgical coding. The role focuses on ensuring coders are proficient in current coding guidelines, client requirements, and compliance standards.
Conduct training sessions for E&M and Surgery coding (Professional and Facility).
Design and update training materials, modules, and assessments based on CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and 2021 E&M guidelines.
Provide hands-on practice sessions and mock audits to assess coder readiness.
Mentor and guide new coders, ensuring smooth transition to production.
Conduct refresher sessions for experienced coders to address errors or guideline updates.
Collaborate with Quality and Operations teams to identify common error trends and create targeted training interventions.
Stay updated with CMS, AAPC, and AMA updates on E&M and surgical coding.
Evaluate coder performance and training effectiveness through tests, audits, and feedback sessions.
Prepare training reports, skill matrices, and audit summaries for management.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, Modifiers, and 2021 E&M guidelines.
Expertise in General Surgery, Orthopedics, or other surgical specialties preferred.
Excellent communication, presentation, and mentoring skills.
Ability to create and deliver interactive training content (slides, quizzes, and case studies).
Proficiency with MS Office tools and EMR/EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Athena).
Prior experience in a US Healthcare BPO or hospital coding training environment.
Exposure to client audits and compliance training.
Ability to manage batch-wise onboarding and certification programs.
