Job Description The Tools Team is a small group of Java full-stack developers responsible for development, maintenance, and support of a collection of currently on-prem web-based applications that support the Mainframe users. These applications streamline, simplify and secure mainframe processes for company-wide activities such as access control, reporting, data management and other production support. A variety of frameworks are currently used (Java EE, JSF, Angular, Spring) across the applications and they run on WAS Liberty servers hosted on z/OS or on Cloud Run in GCP. Software engineers on this team will need to be able to support all aspects of development and engineering for these applications, including any migration or changing of the tech stack type of activities. Responsibilities This role owns the development of improvements for application functions and processes, customer experience, and reduction of technical debt. This also includes activities to simplify the applications to make them more maintainable and extendable for the future. You will need to be able to gather and understand requirements, work cross functionally, and have autonomy to deliver solutions. It will be important to understand the “new” solutions for these applications and pick up on their current tech stacks as you progress. Learning and knowledge sharing are critical. Additionally, this role needs to be able to understand IT policy and ensure that how you work, and all aspects of the applications stay aligned to it, especially as policy changes. It is important then to be collaborative and communicative both in the team and cross functionally, and willing to help discover and share information if it is not known within the team. This also means that asking questions and sharing responsibility is key, so you will be both a mentor and mentee at times. You will be expected to support team documentation in both creation and reviewing and updating. Owning auditing activities will be considered a nice-to-have, but you will need to understand supporting them whether it is internal or external. This role will be integral for supporting the migration and re-writes of the applications to new tech stacks and architecture solutions. Java, Angular, Spring, OpenShift, and cloud hosting/ development (GCP) will be critical. It will be more important to pick up on or know these instead of the current technologies and architecture. Having general software development/ engineering experience will let you understand the current technologies of the applications which include Java EE, JSF, relational databases (DB2) and traditional SQL, and WebSphere Liberty servers. The team uses Git/ GitHub for source code management, a variety of IDEs (Eclipse, VS Code, IntelliJ) to work in, and Tekton/ uDeploy for our build and deploy pipeline. API experience is nice to have. Mainframe platform specific technologies are not a requirement and can be gained through the course of the role’s duties. Lastly, the team follows Agile methodologies and practices so you will need to have experience with Agile, CI/CD, and paired programming. An understanding of DevSecOps and DevOps will also be beneficial as this team has full responsibility for the workflows and deliveries of software. This role will support all stages of the SDLC and the operations of the applications. It is good to be comfortable with code reviews, provide feedback, and follow good habits to create supportable, maintainable, reusable, and extendable code. Job Responsibilities: Program Ownership : Drive end-to-end execution of complex SRE programs, including incident reduction initiatives, service maturity efforts, observability adoption, and disaster recovery planning. Cross-Functional Collaboration : Serve as the primary liaison between SRE, Platform, application teams, and business stakeholders to align program objectives and timelines. Operational Readiness : Support go-live planning, SRE onboarding, hypercare, incident response readiness, and process documentation for new services or platforms. Metrics & Reporting : Track KPIs and SLO compliance, prepare regular updates on program status, risks, and outcomes, and present to SRE leadership. Continuous Improvement : Identify gaps in current operational practices, drive process improvements, and implement best practices from SRE frameworks (e.g., postmortem culture, toil reduction). Risk Management : Proactively assess technical and operational risks and ensure mitigation plans are in place. Tooling and Automation : Partner with SREs and other stakeholders to promote adoption of automation, self-healing systems, and resilience testing tools. Drive Applications Performance Management and Monitoring : Identify Key Performance Indicators, apply monitoring, and report out on compliance. Gather information to develop reporting metrics and KPIs Ensure that all applications adhere to appropriate monitoring standards based on their technology/business process Determine forums and cadence to provide regular monitoring updates Building Successful Relationships : Collaborates with Enterprise Application and Architecture and Infrastructure teams to continuously improve processes and procedures. Liaises with vendors and Service Providers to select services and tools that best meet company goals Managing Projects and Priorities : Functions as a strategic senior technical expert within the department. Develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work. Champions leaders’ vision for product and service delivery. Makes and executes the necessary decisions to keep moving forward toward achievement of goals. Determines priorities, schedules, plans and necessary resources to promote completion of any projects on schedule. Generates and provides accurate and timely results in the form of reports, presentations, etc. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the quality of operations. Delivering on the Needs of Key Stakeholders : Understands and meets the needs of key stakeholders. Communicates concepts in a clear and persuasive manner that is easy to understand. Demonstrates an understanding of business priorities. Supports achievement of performance goals, budget goals, team goals, etc. Skill and Experience: 6-8 years’ experience in information technology process and / or technical project management including: Experience in program or project management in a technical environment, preferably with SRE, DevOps, or Infrastructure Engineering teams Strong understanding of SRE principles , incident management, service-level objectives (SLOs/SLIs), and CI/CD Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects across globally distributed teams Proficiency in using Agile / Scrum methodologies and tools like Jira, Confluence, or Azure DevOps Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and organizational skills Excellent presentation skills (require making presentation deck for executive leadership team) Deep understanding of SRE practices such as Service Level Objectives, Error Budgets, Toil Management, Observability & Monitoring, Blameless Postmortems, Incident Response Process, Capacity Planning Experience working with SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS offerings Ability to work with global teams located in US and India 6+ years experience in a technical discipline role with experience in planning, implementing and evaluating processes, systems and/or initiatives Broad technical acumen across multiple disciplines applications with a solid understanding of current technologies Experience applying measurement processes/methods for assessing program outputs and outcomes or progress toward goals and objectives. Extremely high level of analytical ability with complex problems Ability to work across organizational boundaries, to help lead and influence change Ability to command the process across all levels to ensure customer focus; including being assertive and self-starting Demonstrated leadership experience in influence and garnering alignment from external organizations Ability to align change management strategies with projects Skilled in conceptualizing creative solutions, documenting them, and presenting / selling them to senior management Very high level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and elicit work output in a team environment Education and Certifications: Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent experience / certification Work location: Hyderabad, India.
