Role summary
We are hiring a Temple Architecture Expert (Heritage / Conservation Architect with specialisation in Indian temple architecture) to provide technical leadership and advisory support on conservation, restoration, documentation and design interventions for temples across Uttar Pradesh. The expert will assist the project team in planning, technical appraisals, stakeholder engagement, preparation of drawings and specifications, supervising restoration works and ensuring interventions respect traditional temple form, ritual use and statutory guidelines.
Key responsibilities
- Act as the technical Temple Architecture Expert for the Directorate — provide authoritative inputs on design, conservation methodology and approvals.
- Conduct site surveys, condition assessments, photographic documentation and prepare measured drawings / elevations / sections for temple structures.
- Develop conservation and restoration proposals: conservation strategy, methodology, materials specifications, contractor scope, and Bill of Quantities.
- Prepare and review architectural drawings (schematics, working drawings) and technical specifications using AutoCAD / Revit / appropriate CAD tools.
- Provide inputs for tender documents, technical evaluations, contractor selection and supervise implementation for technical compliance.
- Ensure all interventions comply with relevant conservation / heritage statutes, applicable Government Orders (GOs) and guidelines (state & national heritage / ASI norms).
- Represent the Directorate in inter-departmental and stakeholder meetings, including district authorities, priests/temple committees, local communities and contractors.
- Lead/participate in technical presentations, public consultations and capacity-building workshops for masons/contractors/officials.
- Liaise with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), State Archaeology / Heritage departments and other heritage agencies as required.
- Maintain project documentation, MIS, progress reports and provide timely updates to senior management.
- Identify risks to structure/heritage value and propose mitigation measures (structural interventions, drainage, ventilation, access, ritual use compatibility).
- Mentor junior architects/engineers on heritage practice and quality control during execution.
Essential qualifications & experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (B. Arch) or equivalent in Conservation.
- Specialisation or demonstrable expertise in Temple / Medieval Indian Architecture, Conservation, Architectural History or Heritage Conservation.
- Minimum 5 years’ post-qualification experience in government advisory, heritage conservation projects, temple restoration, architectural consultancy or similar (preferably with public-sector/PSU/Government projects).
- Proven track record of at least one completed heritage/temple conservation project (design + supervision) or 2+ significant assignments involving documentation/conservation.
- Strong knowledge of historic building materials and traditional temple construction techniques (stone carving, lime mortar, timber, joinery, masonry detailing).
- Experience preparing technical specifications, cost estimates, tender documents and supervising field works.
- Proficiency in architectural documentation tools: AutoCAD (required); Revit, SketchUp, 3D photogrammetry / laser scanning knowledge is desirable.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills — experience interacting with government departments, religious trusts/committees and local communities.
- Ability to travel frequently and perform fieldwork in rural and semi-urban locations.
Desirable / Preferred
- Degree / certification in Conservation (e.g., Post-grad diploma in conservation, ICCROM-related training) or PhD in Architectural History / Conservation.
- Prior work with ASI, State Archaeology Departments, UNESCO projects, or reputed heritage consultancies.
- Experience in structural assessment of heritage masonry and familiarity with retrofitting techniques respectful of heritage values.
- Experience in training masons and traditional craftsmen, and preparing capacity-building modules.
- Familiarity with statutory processes, permissions, and Government Orders (GOs) related to religious structures and public works.
- Good report-writing skills and ability to present technical findings in both Hindi and English.

- Timely site-condition reports + measured drawings for assigned temples.
- Conservation strategy & detailed working drawings for selected temples.
- Tender-ready technical specifications and BOQ for restoration works.
- Supervision reports and quality compliance during execution.
- Number of stakeholder consultations/workshops conducted & training sessions delivered.
- Acceptance of technical submissions by the Directorate / statutory authorities.
