Role PurposeThe Quality Engineer – Press Shop is responsible for ensuring consistent quality of stamped sheet metal components by implementing in-process quality controls, inspection systems, defect prevention, and continuous improvement in line with automotive quality standards.Key Responsibilities1. Incoming & In-Process Quality ControlInspect incoming raw materials:CRCA, HR, GI, Stainless Steel, AluminiumVerify:Thickness, surface finish, coating conditionConduct first-off approval after tool setup or changeoverMonitor in-process inspections at presses and fabrication stages2. Dimensional & Visual InspectionPerform inspections using:Vernier, micrometer, height gauge, dial indicatorsGo/No-Go gaugesChecking fixturesVerify GD&T compliance as per drawingsIdentify defects such as:BurrsCracksWrinklesSpringbackSurface dents and scratches3. Process Control & Quality SystemsImplement and maintain:Control PlansProcess Flow DiagramsWork InstructionsMonitor SPC for critical dimensionsEnsure process capability (Cp, Cpk) targets are met4. Problem Solving & Corrective ActionsLead and support:Root Cause Analysis (Why-Why, Fishbone)Corrective & Preventive Actions (CAPA)Coordinate with:ProductionTool RoomMaintenanceReduce rejection, rework, and customer complaints5. PPAP & Customer RequirementsSupport PPAP documentation for press shop parts:Dimensional reportsMSAPFMEAControl PlanEnsure compliance with:Customer-specific requirementsAutomotive standards (IATF 16949)6. Audits & ComplianceParticipate in:Internal auditsCustomer auditsProcess auditsEnsure adherence to 5S, safety, and standard workMaintain quality records and traceability7. Continuous ImprovementDrive scrap reduction initiativesImprove:Tool lifeProcess stabilityFirst-pass yieldSupport new product launches in coordination with NPDKey Skills & CompetenciesTechnical SkillsStrong knowledge of:Sheet metal stamping processesPress tools (blanking, piercing, forming)Drawing reading & GD&TQuality tools:APQPPPAPPFMEASPCMSAMeasurement instruments & checking fixturesBehavioral SkillsStrong observation and analytical skillsShop-floor problem-solving mindsetEffective communication with operators & engineersAttention to detail and discipline in documentationEducation & ExperienceQualification:Diploma / BE / BTech in Mechanical / Production EngineeringExperience:2–5 years in press shop quality (Automotive preferred)Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)Press shop rejection rateFirst-off approval successCustomer complaints related to stampingPPAP right-first-time approvalScrap & rework reductionAudit non-conformities (zero major NCs)Preferred (Added Advantage)Exposure to:Progressive toolsHigh-tonnage press linesExperience with:Powder coating / CED pre-press inspectionOEM / Tier-1 customer interaction experience
