Privacy Counsel

About the Role

Chargebee is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Privacy Counsel to join our Legal department. You will play a key role in driving operational maturity of our organisation’s privacy program and compliance with global data protection laws and regulations, including by implementing and maintaining privacy processes, tools, and documentation.

This is an excellent opportunity for a legal privacy professional who is passionate about data protection and operational excellence, and who thrives in a fast-paced environment. A strong understanding of privacy operations and risk management is essential. The person in this role will need to roll up their sleeves and really dig into the operational aspects of the program and identify issues proactively.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement privacy initiatives across the organization.
• Create, maintain and update records of processing activities (RoPAs), data maps, and data inventories.
• Conduct and coordinate privacy assessments such as DPIAs, PIAs, and vendor privacy reviews.
• Manage intake and tracking of privacy-related requests, such as data subject access requests (DSARs) and incident response actions.
• Help operationalize privacy-by-design practices and monitor product and project compliance with privacy requirements.
• Partner with cross-functional teams (Security, IT, Product, HR, etc.) to support privacy compliance.
• Develop privacy documentation and ensure continuous improvement of privacy policies, procedures, and training materials.
• Monitor regulatory developments and help operationalize new requirements.
• Prepare reports and metrics related to the privacy program's performance and compliance status.
• Advise internal stakeholders on privacy implications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and automated decision-making systems.

Required Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience in privacy, data protection, compliance operations, or related fields.
• LLB/BL or JD law degree
• Working knowledge of global privacy laws and frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA).
• General understanding of cloud infrastructure, integrations, APIs, SaaS product architecture, AI.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• A collaborative mindset with the ability to partner across departments.
• A process-driven approach to managing compliance workflows.
• Comfortable working in a dynamic, evolving regulatory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• CIPP or similar privacy certification
• Experience providing training regarding privacy
• Experience managing privacy compliance tools or systems (e.g., OneTrust, TrustArc, Transcend).
