Precision Mechanical and Vacuum Engineer

Bharat Atomic exists to build India's first commercial Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and, through it, the technical foundations of a domestic semiconductor-equipment ecosystem.

We are designing and manufacturing a Field Emission SEM for sub-nanometer imaging - this will be one of the first high-tech analytical instrument built in the country.

You will own the complete mechanical design and all computer-aided design work.

This is an instrumentation engineering position requiring precision, vacuum, and integration experience.

Responsibilities

• Produce complete computer-aided design assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and bill of materials with clear tolerances.
• Control vibration, drift, and thermal expansion through careful structural layout and material selection.
• Work directly with in-house equipment on design for machining, welding, finishing, cleaning, and vacuum qualification.
• Build and test prototypes; refine designs based on measurement and performance results.

• Precision Motion.

  Develop precision motion systems for sample positioning and beam alignment with micron-level stability.
• Integrate mechanical, electrical, and optical components with correct alignment, grounding, and shielding.

• Vacuum Systems.

  Design all mechanical systems: vacuum chamber, column supports, sample stage, detectors, lock-lock, and frame.
• Design for high and ultra-high vacuum: flanges, seals, feedthroughs, viewports, and bake-out strategy.

Minimum Qualifications

• At least 5 years of experience designing precision scientific or semiconductor instruments such as electron microscopes, lithography tools, metrology systems.
• Expert user of professional computer-aided design software with strong command of tolerances and geometric dimensioning.
• Demonstrated experience designing for high or ultra-high vacuum, including materials, seals, and leak testing.
• Experience designing precision motion assemblies using bearings, flexures, piezoelectric or stepper-driven mechanisms.
• Ability to perform structural, thermal, and vibration analysis and validate results through testing.
• Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication, supplier management, and assembly documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing or integrating specimen stage systems for scanning or transmission electron microscopes.
• Understanding of magnetic shielding and contamination control within electron-optical assemblies.
• Experience developing vibration isolation structures and managing airflow for mechanically and thermally stable instruments.
• Proven work with ultra-high vacuum systems used in electron microscopy or related instrumentation.
• Background in designing complex equipment for semiconductor or biotechnology research environments.
