MongoDB Database Administrator (DBA) – Kubernetes & Percona

About the Role

The MongoDB DBA will be responsible for managing, optimizing, and ensuring the reliability and scalability of our MongoDB infrastructure. The candidate should possess strong expertise in MongoDB database administration, Kubernetes orchestration (for containerized database deployments), and proficiency with Percona Server for MongoDB. This role will work closely with DevOps, backend engineering, and infrastructure teams to guarantee high availability and performance of all database services.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and maintain MongoDB and Percona Server for MongoDB in on-premise or cloud environments.

• Manage MongoDB deployments in Kubernetes using Kubernetes Operators (MongoDB, Percona, or custom operators).

• Implement, maintain, and fine-tune MongoDB replica sets and sharded clusters for performance and scalability.

• Automate provisioning, monitoring, scaling, and backup of MongoDB clusters using Helm charts and k8s CRDs.

• Design and implement backup and disaster recovery strategies using Percona Backup for MongoDB (PBM).

• Perform database performance tuning, capacity planning, and query optimization.

• Monitor database health using Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent observability stacks.

• Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents, replication lag, and failover events.

• Enforce security best practices (role-based access control, TLS encryption, auditing).

• Collaborate with DevOps engineers on infrastructure changes and deployment pipelines.

• Document operational runbooks, backup policies, and cluster upgrade procedures.

Required Skills and Experience

• 4–8 years of hands-on experience as a MongoDB DBA in production environments.

• Strong understanding of MongoDB architecture, sharding, and internal mechanics.

• Experience with Percona Server for MongoDB and Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM).

• Proven expertise with Kubernetes (k8s) and MongoDB Kubernetes Operators (Percona or Atlas).

• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (Helm, Terraform, Ansible).

• Strong background in scripting (Python, Bash, or Go) to automate DBA tasks.

• Practical knowledge of Linux systems administration.

• Exposure to distributed tracing and application performance monitoring (APM).

• Familiarity with CI/CD and Git-based workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certifications: MongoDB Certified DBA, Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or equivalent.

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and managed Kubernetes environments (EKS, GKE, or AKS).

• Understanding of observability stacks like OpenTelemetry and logging pipelines (Fluentd, Loki).

• Knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) is a plus.

Engagement Details

This position is an ongoing part-time consulting role, requiring a few hours per week/month depending on operational demand.

The consultant will:

• Support ongoing database stability and performance improvements.

• Provide advisory input for architecture and scaling strategies.

• Be available for periodic reviews, incident resolution, and long-term maintenance planning.
