Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Manufacturing Engineer to manage and optimize the lapping process for achieving precision surface finish and flatness on critical components. The role involves development, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of lapping operations to meet tight dimensional tolerances and surface quality specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and optimize lapping processes to achieve desired flatness, parallelism, and surface finish (e.g., Ra, Sa).
• Select appropriate lapping machines (single side), abrasives (diamond, aluminium oxide, SiO2 etc.), and consumables (lapping plates, slurries, carriers).
• Design and implement process parameters such as pressure, speed, slurry flow rate, and cycle time.
• Evaluate incoming component condition and define pre-lapping/post-lapping requirements.
• Create and maintain process documentation, SOPs, work instructions, and quality records.
• Troubleshoot lapping defects (e.g., scratches, waviness, taper, inconsistent finish) and implement corrective actions.
• Coordinate with QA to ensure part compliance to specifications using tools like surface profilometers, flatness gauges, and optical flats.
• Conduct trials and validations for new components and new product introduction (NPI).
• Work with suppliers for sourcing and maintaining lapping equipment and consumables.
• Drive continuous improvement projects to improve yield, reduce cycle time, and minimize rework.
• Train operators and technicians on process control, maintenance, and safety.

Qualifications:

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Production Engineering, or related field.
• 2–5 years of hands-on experience in lapping or surface finishing processes.
• Strong knowledge of lapping machines (Lapmaster, Hyder or equivalent).
• Experience in working with tight tolerances for flatness (<5 μm), thickness, and Ra/Sa surface finish (<0.05 µm).
• Familiarity with surface measurement techniques (optical profilometers, interferometers, micrometers, dial indicators).
• Understanding of material removal rate (MRR) behaviour in fine finishing processes.
• Experience with hard-to-machine materials ( stainless steel, carbide, etc.) is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

• Knowledge of CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) or polishing processes is a must.
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing tools (5S, Kaizen, Root Cause Analysis).
• Exposure to working in cleanroom or high-precision environments (e.g., medical, optics, aerospace).
• Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and surface finish specifications.
