Role & responsibilities

Employee relations

  • Conflict resolution:

    They act as a mediator to address and resolve conflicts, grievances, and sensitive employee issues.
  • Employee support:

    They serve as the first point of contact for employee questions regarding company policies, benefits, and administrative processes.
  • Disciplinary action:

    They advise managers on disciplinary issues and may assist with terminations, ensuring a fair and compliant process.

Compliance and policy management

  • Policy implementation:

    They develop, interpret, and implement HR policies, and update the employee handbook to align with business goals and legal requirements.
  • Regulatory compliance:

    They stay up-to-date with federal, state, and local employment laws, including anti-discrimination and workplace safety rules.
  • Record-keeping:

    They maintain accurate employee files and HR records, often using Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).

Benefits and payroll administration

  • Benefits management:

    They assist with the administration of employee benefits programs, such as health insurance, retirement plans, and leave policies.
  • Payroll coordination:

    They may provide input for payroll processing, manage leave tracking, and address employee queries related to pay.

Performance management and development

  • Performance appraisals:

    They help manage the performance review process, including tracking goals and maintaining performance records.
  • Training coordination:

    They may assist in identifying employee skill gaps, organizing training sessions, and collecting feedback to improve training effectiveness.
  • Talent development:

    In some smaller companies, they may also be involved in succession planning and creating career-pathing frameworks.

Strategic contributions

  • Data reporting:

    They analyze HR metrics, such as turnover rates and time-to-hire, and present data-driven insights to leadership to inform business decisions.
