Job Title - Financial Counsellor


Job Summary

The Financial Counsellor is responsible for assisting patients and their families in understanding and navigating hospital billing, insurance coverage, financial assistance programs, and payment options. The role ensures transparency in hospital charges and helps patients make informed financial decisions regarding their healthcare.

Key Responsibilities


Patient Financial Assessment

    • Review and explain hospital charges, insurance benefits, co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses.
    • Assist patients in estimating their hospital costs based on services rendered.
    • Insurance Coordination


    • Liaise with insurance companies to verify patient coverage and pre-authorization requirements.
    • Guide patients through the process of claims submission and denial resolution.
    • Financial Counseling


    • Assess patients' ability to pay and provide information on payment plans or financial aid programs.
    • Counsel patients on government or institutional programs such as Medicaid, charity care, or hospital subsidies.
    • Documentation and Records


    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of all financial counseling activities.
    • Ensure documentation complies with hospital policies and healthcare regulations.
    • Collaboration


    • Work closely with billing, admissions, and social work departments to ensure seamless patient support.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings when required.
    • Customer Service


    • Respond to patient inquiries and concerns related to billing or insurance with empathy and professionalism.
    • Promote a positive patient experience through transparent and compassionate communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field (preferred).
  • 2 to 6 years of experience in a healthcare financial counselling or billing role.
  • Knowledge of insurance plans (private, Medicare, Medicaid), hospital billing, and financial assistance programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in hospital information systems (HIS) and billing software.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and integrity.

Preferred Skills

  • Bilingual abilities for hospitals serving diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with local and national healthcare financial regulations and aid programs
