Job Description

Database Migration Specialist – SQL/DB2/Oracle to PostgreSQL

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Database Migration Specialist to lead and execute database migration projects from SQL Server, DB2, and Oracle to PostgreSQL. The ideal candidate will have hands-on expertise in data modeling, schema conversion, performance tuning, and automation of migration processes.

Key Responsibilities

Analyze legacy databases (SQL Server, DB2, Oracle) to identify schema, data, stored procedures, and dependencies.
Plan and execute seamless database migrations to PostgreSQL with minimal downtime.
Use tools like AWS DMS, ora2pg, pgloader, or native scripts to automate migration.
Convert and optimize PL/SQL or T-SQL procedures/functions to PL/pgSQL.
Conduct data validation, integrity checks, and reconciliation post-migration.
Tune queries, indexing strategies, and PostgreSQL configurations for optimal performance.
Work closely with application and infrastructure teams to support end-to-end migration.
Document migration processes, issues encountered, and mitigation steps.
Implement rollback and disaster recovery strategies for migration phases.

Required Skills And Qualifications

4+ years of experience in database migration and administration.
Proven experience migrating databases from SQL Server, DB2, or Oracle to PostgreSQL.
Strong command of SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL, and PL/pgSQL.
Proficiency in PostgreSQL performance tuning, indexing, and replication.
Experience with data migration tools (e.g., AWS DMS, ora2pg, pgloader, SQL Developer).
Familiarity with database design, normalization, and schema refactoring.
Hands-on experience with Linux-based environments.
Good understanding of ETL processes, data pipelines, and scripting (Bash, Python, or similar).
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with cloud database migration (AWS RDS for PostgreSQL or Aurora).
Exposure to DevOps tools, version control (Git), and CI/CD pipelines.
Knowledge of PostgreSQL extensions (PostGIS, pg_partman, etc.) is a plus.
Certifications in PostgreSQL or cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) are an added advantage.
