Job Purpose/ Summary

In steel production, quality testing is a critical part of ensuring the steel meets industry standards, specifications, and customer requirements. Engineers play a vital role in overseeing and performing various tests throughout the manufacturing process.

Job Title

Support - Quality Assurance - Steel Melting Shop - Jhagadia - SteelInspect and verify the quality of raw materials (e.g., scrap metal, alloys. before they are used in the steel melting process. Ensure that all incoming materials meet the required specifications for the production of high-quality steel.Oversee the melting process in furnaces (electric arc furnaces, induction furnaces, etc.. to ensure proper temperature and alloy composition are maintained. Conduct real-time monitoring of parameters like temperature, pressure, and chemical composition to achieve the desired steel grade.Perform sampling of molten steel at various stages to analyze its chemical composition (e.g., carbon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus content.. Use spectrometry and other testing methods to verify that the steel meets the required specifications.Carry out mechanical tests such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness to determine the material properties of the steel. Analyze the results of mechanical tests to ensure steel quality and suitability for its intended use.Perform metallographic analysis to assess the microstructure of steel (grain size, phase composition, etc.. and identify any potential defects. Ensure that the steel’s microstructure aligns with the desired quality standards for strength, ductility, and other performance characteristics.Utilize various non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic testing, radiography, and magnetic particle testing to detect surface and internal defects in steel products. Collaborate with the production team to resolve any issues identified through NDT

Principal Accountabilities

Monitor Incoming Materials: Ensure that raw materials such as scrap metal, alloys, and flux are inspected for quality before they enter the steel melting process. Material Testing: Perform initial quality checks and tests (e.g., chemical composition, physical properties. on raw materials to verify compliance with specifications.Sample Collection: Take representative samples of molten steel at various stages of production for chemical testing.Tensile Testing: Conduct tensile strength tests to measure the ability of the steel to withstand stretching forces.Hardness Testing: Perform hardness tests (e.g., Rockwell, Brinell. to assess the steel’s resistance to indentation. Impact Testing: Carry out impact tests (Charpy or Izod. to measure the material’s toughness and its ability to absorb energy during impact. Yield and Elongation Testing: Test the steel’s yield strength and elongation to ensure the material’s formability and suitability for specific applicationsMetallography: Perform metallurgical analysis (microscopic examination. of steel samples to assess their microstructure, grain size, and phase composition. Defect Detection: Identify any irregularities or defects in the steel, such as inclusions, voids, or improper phase formation, which could impact the material’s performance. Microhardness Testing: Perform microhardness tests to assess local hardness variations within the steel’s microstructure.
