Research Scientist

full-time onsite role

Responsibilities:

• ​​Research, build and advance core foundational capabilities for Propheus, including the Digital Atlas and real-world models that form the company’s core IP and power multiple applications.
• Lead the team working on various research projects in the field of Physical AI ranging from real world models to population simulation. 
• Publish research in top machine learning conferences, open-source relevant components, and build an active community around the team’s innovations.
• Understand business and research goals in various sectors such as Retail, CPG, Real Estate, O2O and Telco and contribute to building data science applications such as demand forecasting, inventory optimization, product recommendations, and promotion planning.
• Work with large, messy datasets (sales, customers, products, promotions, etc.) to extract useful insights and identify patterns that improve model performance and business outcomes.
• Evaluate and implement open-source tools and technologies that support data processing, modeling, and deployment, and suggest improvements where needed.
• Document research findings, model experiments, data workflows, and implementation details clearly and consistently.
• Lead and guide a team of data scientists reviewing their work, providing technical direction and providing guidance on research areas.

What we look for in Candidates:

Educational Background and Professional Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, or a related discipline : 4-6 years of relevant industry experience as a Data Scientist (or in closely related fields such as Software Engineering or Data Engineering).

• Master’s degree in a related discipline : 3–5 years of relevant industry experience.

• Ph.D. in a related discipline : 1–2 years of relevant industry experience.

Technical Competencies

• Strong understanding of the Python programming language and core scientific computing libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib.
• Proficiency in data processing and manipulation using Pandas/PySpark.
• Strong mathematical foundations in probability, statistics, linear algebra, and optimization.
• Solid grasp of classical machine learning algorithms, both in theory and practice, with the ability to implement and tune models using Scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, or similar Python packages.
• Practical experience using large language models (LLMs)  for data cleaning, enrichment, and embedding generation to support downstream models and
• analytics workflows.
• Experience working in modern cloud computing environments such as AWS or Microsoft Azure for data storage, processing, and deployment.
• End-to-end ownership of the problem you are working on.

Nice to Haves

• Familiarity with big data processing technologies, especially Apache Spark; experience with PySpark is highly desirable. 
• Experience working with geospatial data is highly desirable. Specifically, experience with Apache Sedona would be a plus.
• Exposure to deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Basic understanding of linear programming for supply chain and optimization problems; experience using PuLP in Python and solvers such as Gurobi or CPLEX is a plus.
• Experience using FastAPI (or similar frameworks) to develop and deploy backend services that support data science applications.
• Prior experience mentoring or guiding junior team members.
• Experience solving data science problems in the Retail or Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) sectors.
• A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Operations Research, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, or Data Science will be considered a strong plus.
• Relevant research experience and publications in leading venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, KDD (Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining), ICLR,  AISTATS, or other retail and applied data science conferences will be viewed favorably.
