R&D Scientist – Sustainable Materials (Paper, Coating & Fiber Innovation)

About Us VLPB Labs is the research and innovation arm of VLPB, a leading paper manufacturer with a vision to transform sustainable materials from recycled and agricultural sources into high-value, export-ready products. We are currently building a state-of-the-art R&D program focused on biodegradable paper-based innovations with commercial applications in agriculture and packaging. Role Overview We are seeking a highly motivated and capable R&D Scientist with a background in materials science, paper/fiber technology, or sustainable coatings to lead the formulation, prototyping, and testing of fiber-based biodegradable products. The role involves both lab-based research and field-level application trials, working closely with our technical leadership and manufacturing teams. Key Responsibilities • Lead R&D • Develop and optimize fiber blends using recycled paper and agri-waste • Formulate water-based and biodegradable coatings • Conduct lab testing for barrier properties, strength, biodegradability, and field performance • Collaborate on pilot production trials and coordinate with external labs when needed • Prepare technical documentation, contribute to IP filings, and support regulatory compliance • Liaise with advisors, suppliers, and potential buyers during product development Qualifications • Master’s or Ph.D. in: • Pulp and Paper Science • Materials Science / Sustainable Product Design • Chemical Engineering / Biotechnology / Agronomy (with a materials focus) • Strong understanding of natural polymers, bio-based coatings, or cellulose-based substrates • Familiarity with paper testing protocols (Cobb, tensile, WVTR, etc.) • Experience with lab-scale equipment and pilot-scale R&D Preferred Attributes • Entrepreneurial mindset, with a practical, results-driven approach What We Offer • Opportunity to work at the intersection of research, sustainability, and manufacturing • Hands-on access to pilot-scale equipment • A leadership role in an innovation-led transformation of a ₹200 Cr company • Supportive environment for filing patents and publishing research • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and expertise Application Instructions Please send the following to pro@vlpapers.com: • Your updated resume • A brief cover letter (max 1 page) outlining your interest in this role • Any relevant project or publication links (optional) Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
