A Physical Therapist (PT) is a licensed healthcare professional who specializes in helping patients regain or improve their physical mobility, manage pain, and restore function following injury, illness, or surgery. A PT develops personalized treatment plans, provides therapeutic interventions, and educates patients on self-management and injury prevention.
Core duties and responsibilitiesPatient assessment: Conduct initial and ongoing evaluations of patients to diagnose physical impairments, assess their functional abilities, and determine their needs.Treatment plan development: Create personalized and evidence-based treatment plans that incorporate various therapeutic techniques and exercises to help patients achieve their goals.Therapeutic interventions: Administer a range of treatments, such as therapeutic exercises, manual therapy (including massage and joint mobilization), and electrotherapy (like TENS or ultrasound).Patient education: Educate patients and their families about their condition, the recovery process, and how to perform exercises and self-care techniques at home.Progress monitoring: Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment, monitor patient progress, and make adjustments to the care plan as needed.Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care services, evaluations, and progress notes.Collaboration: Work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, surgeons, occupational therapists, and nurses, to ensure a coordinated and effective care plan for the patient.Risk management: Ensure a safe and clean working environment, and adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations concerning patient care and confidentiality.
