A Charge Nurse in a Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) plays a vital leadership role in a high-acuity environment where patients have undergone complex cardiac and thoracic surgeries (e.g., CABG, valve replacements, heart/lung transplants). important duties to be performed by the selected Nurse In charge (ICU) would be: Supervise and Coordinate Staff Allocate patient assignments based on acuity and nurse competency. Manage shift schedules, breaks, and coverage needs. Act as a resource and mentor for bedside nurses. Clinical Oversight Ensure high standards of care for critically ill cardiothoracic patients. Monitor patient progress and intervene in emergencies or complex cases. Collaborate closely with surgeons, intensivists, and anesthesiologists. Manage Unit Operations Maintain optimal staffing levels and unit workflow. Ensure readiness of critical equipment (e.g., ECMO, IABP, ventilators). Enforce infection control and safety protocols. Patient and Family Communication Provide clear, compassionate updates to families, especially during crises. Address concerns, complaints, and special needs effectively. Facilitate Interdisciplinary Collaboration Coordinate multidisciplinary rounds. Communicate effectively with PT, RT, pharmacy, social work, etc. Mentoring and Staff Development Precept new nurses and support clinical education. Promote best practices and continuing education within the unit. Emergency Response Leadership Take command during code blues, rapid responses, or patient decompensation. Coordinate team actions and delegate responsibilities in high-stress situations. Documentation and Reporting Ensure accurate documentation of clinical and administrative data. Complete handoff reports, incident reports, and audit tools. Policy Implementation and Compliance Enforce hospital and unit protocols, especially for high-risk procedures. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission). Performance Improvement and Quality Assurance Participate in QI projects related to infection rates, readmissions, or surgical outcomes. Monitor and address unit-based performance metrics (e.g., CLABSI, CAUTI).
