Job Description

Mechanical Design Engineer — Job Description (With Solid Edge Emphasis)Role Overview

A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing mechanical parts, assemblies, and systems using CAD tools, particularly Solid Edge. The role involves working across the full product lifecycle — from concept and prototyping to production support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create 3D models of parts and assemblies using Solid Edge.
  • Develop detailed 2D drawings (production drawings) from the 3D models.
  • Ensure designs adhere to engineering standards, tolerances, and GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing).
  • Participate in concept design reviews, design for manufacturability (DFM), and design for assembly (DFA).
  • Work closely with manufacturing, procurement, and quality teams to ensure smooth transition of designs to production.
  • Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and maintain design data.
  • Provide technical support during prototype builds and during product launches.
  • Modify or optimize existing designs based on feedback, testing, or cost-reduction goals.
  • Liaise with vendors for part fabrication and validate vendor drawings.
  • Document design changes and maintain design records in PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system (if applicable).
  • Conduct design verification, and help in validation activities as required.
  • Mentor or guide junior engineers in CAD practices and design processes.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Strong proficiency in Solid Edge (3D modelling, assemblies, and 2D drawing). Many jobs listing Solid Edge explicitly require several years of experience. jobs.smartrecruiters.com+2sigmarrecruitment.com+2
  • Good understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and how it impacts manufacturability.
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical design — designing real mechanical parts, not just theoretical models.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes: machining, sheet-metal, welding, casting, or whatever is relevant to your product. For example, some roles explicitly ask for sheet-metal part design in Solid Edge.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience in CNC machining, fabrication, welding, or assembly. For example, some Solid Edge Design Engineers are expected to “oversee mechanical fabrication and assembly processes.” www.pnet.co.za+1
  • Experience in independent design or small design office environment. www.pnet.co.za
  • Experience with design for cost reduction, value engineering.

Experience

  • Typically 3–6 years of experience for a mid-level role working in mechanical design with Solid Edge. For example, TestingXperts’ role requires 3 years on Solid Edge.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per month

Benefits:

  • Leave encashment
