Job Description: Graphic Design Faculty Position Title : Graphic Design Faculty Department : Arts/Design/Visual Arts Reports To : Department Chair or Academic Director Position Type : Full-Time/Part-Time (depending on institution) Job Summary : The Graphic Design Faculty member is responsible for teaching undergraduate or graduate-level courses in graphic design, encompassing both theoretical and practical aspects of the field. This includes educating students on design principles, tools, techniques, and the history of graphic design. The faculty member is also expected to contribute to curriculum development, support student projects, mentor students, engage in professional development, and foster a creative, collaborative classroom environment. Key Responsibilities : Teaching & Instruction : Teach courses in graphic design, including but not limited to design fundamentals, typography, digital media, branding, web design, user experience (UX) design, motion graphics, and print production. Develop and deliver engaging lectures, studio sessions, and hands-on projects that align with course objectives. Assess student progress through assignments, exams, critiques, and portfolios. Foster an inclusive, supportive, and innovative learning environment. Maintain office hours and provide academic advising for students. Curriculum Development & Improvement : Collaborate with colleagues to design, update, and enhance curriculum based on current industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices. Ensure the curriculum is relevant, challenging, and provides students with the skills and knowledge required for success in the graphic design field. Student Mentorship & Feedback : Provide individual feedback on student work, offer guidance on projects, and help students develop their creative skills. Support students with career planning, including portfolio development, internships, and job placement assistance. Encourage professional growth by recommending industry events, competitions, or networking opportunities. Research & Professional Development : Stay current with graphic design trends, software, technologies, and industry standards. Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as workshops, conferences, and creative projects. Participate in research, publishing, and creative practice to contribute to the academic community. Administrative Duties : Participate in department meetings, faculty committees, and college events as required. Assist with student recruitment, marketing materials, and promoting the graphic design program. Maintain records of student attendance, grading, and other academic documentation. Community Engagement : Develop relationships with local and international design professionals, organizations, and industry partners. Encourage student participation in design exhibitions, conferences, and other relevant activities. Qualifications : Education : A Master's degree (MFA, MA, or similar) in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or a related field is preferred. A Bachelor's degree with significant industry experience may be considered for certain positions. Experience : At least 3-5 years of professional graphic design experience. Previous teaching or mentoring experience in a higher education setting is highly preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) and other design tools. A strong portfolio showcasing professional work in graphic design and/or digital media. Skills : Strong understanding of design principles, typography, color theory, branding, and visual storytelling. Proficiency in web design, digital design tools, and emerging media. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for teaching and student interaction. Ability to foster a positive, diverse, and inclusive classroom environment. Strong organizational and time management skills. Additional Qualities : Creative thinking and passion for teaching. Ability to motivate and inspire students. Commitment to professional development and staying up-to-date with design trends. Ability to work collaboratively with other faculty, staff, and students. Preferred Qualifications : Doctorate in a related field (optional for some institutions). Experience in teaching online or hybrid courses. Knowledge of web development, UI/UX design, motion graphics, or 3D modeling. Active participation in the design community through exhibitions, collaborations, or other professional activities.
